SummerWorks is Here, and I’m Ready to Dive In – front mezz junkies, Theater News

Frontmezzjunkies reports: Four shows on my SummerWorks 2026 schedule, plus a few I wish I could squeeze in as the Fight | Flight festival opens across Toronto

I’ve been looking forward to SummerWorks for weeks, and now that the festival is finally opening, my calendar is already feeling the pressure. From August 6 to 16, the SummerWorks Performance Festival takes over venues and public spaces across Toronto with 35 projects spanning theatre, dance, live art, music, site-engaged performance, and community programming. This year’s Fight | Flight theme promises work rooted in place, community, ancestry, memory, consent, transformation, identity, resistance, humour, and intimacy, and after writing about the festival’s ambitious lineup back in June, I’m particularly excited to stop reading descriptions and start actually seeing some of this work. My own festival begins on August 8 with two performances in one very full day, followed by two more shows over the next few nights (then unfortunately, I have to head out of town).

First up is Retina Maneuver by Ping-Hsiang Wang. The festival describes the work as a lecture-performance built around a fanatical search for queer understanding through digital archives. That combination immediately catches my queer eye, particularly in a festival so interested in the way artists use performance to dig into identity, memory, and history. Then, after a quick turnaround, it’s off to Golden Rez Dog by Marcus Merasty. The festival describes it as a somatic investigation into personal, collective, and Indigenous ancestral histories. Two performances in one day, two very different approaches to the body, memory, identity, and history. Exactly the kind of double bill that makes a festival schedule feel exciting before the first lights even go up.

On Monday, after a Sunday of watching some live tennis up by my alma mater, York University, I’ll be seeing Blood Brothers by Sheep’s Clothing Theatre, an immersive, site-specific adaptation of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar staged at the Delta Upsilon Fraternity on the University of Toronto campus. Presented through SummerWorks’ new Expansion Pack initiative with Outside the March, it takes one of Shakespeare’s most politically charged plays into a very particular contemporary location, and I couldn’t be more excited to see where they take it. Then later that week comes Our Other Organ by Boaz Barkan, a humorous and unsettling dissection of contemporary Jewish identity. The four shows on my schedule already suggest just how broad this year’s festival is, moving from digital archives and queer understanding to Indigenous ancestry, Shakespearean political intrigue, and questions of Jewish identity. That kind of range is exactly why I love SummerWorks.

Michael Caldwell, Artistic Director of SummerWorks, writes that despite the difficult moment we are living through, “we long for connection and understanding.” That idea seems to sit at the heart of this year’s festival. Caldwell describes Fight | Flight as a portal through which audiences can encounter artists exploring place, community, ancestry, memory, consent, transformation, and identity, while responding to the complicated world around us through resistance, humour, and intimacy. This year’s unusually strong international presence also makes the festival feel especially expansive, bringing artists from across Canada and around the world into Toronto. A lot is happening across these eleven days, but what excites me is the prospect of spending some of them moving from one performance to another, seeing what a few of these artists have to say, and discovering where the connections between the works begin to emerge.

Four shows are circled on my calendar, but I’m already wishing I had room for a few more. Festivals are Scary: Fish Walks by the Lake, Provisions, and Soft Squishy Things are all sitting there tempting me, and I suspect there will be plenty of other moments during the festival when I wish I could be more available than I am. That is part of the particular torture and pleasure of SummerWorks and the summertime in Toronto. There is always something else happening somewhere in the city. For now, I’m ready for the ancestors, the politics, the questions of identity, the strange spaces, the unexpected connections, and whatever other surprises these four performances have waiting for me. The schedule is set. Now I just have to see where SummerWorks takes me.
