The 2026 Chita Rivera Award Nominations Dance Into Focus – front mezz junkies, Theater News

Frontmezzjunkies reports: A season of movement, storytelling, and artistry takes center stage as this year’s nominees are revealed

There is a particular kind of electricity that lives in dance, a charge that travels through the body before it ever reaches the mind. When the 2026 Chita Rivera Award nominations were announced, that same current seemed to ripple through the season once more, calling back the performances, the rhythms, and the moments that refused to sit still. These nominations do more than recognize excellence. They reignite it, reminding us how deeply movement has shaped this theatrical year.

Honoring outstanding choreography, dancers, and ensembles across Broadway, Off-Broadway, and film, the Chita Rivera Awards continue to stand as a vital celebration of storytelling through motion. This year’s nominations reflect a season alive with kinetic imagination, where bodies became instruments of narrative and emotion, carrying stories that words alone could not fully contain. From sweeping musical revivals to bold new works, the range of recognized productions speaks to a landscape that is both expansive and deeply connected through its commitment to physical expression.

The Broadway categories alone offer a vivid snapshot of that energy. Productions such as Schmigadoon!, Ragtime, Titaníque, and CATS: The Jellicle Ball appear throughout the nominations, each bringing a distinct movement vocabulary to the stage. The choreography category highlights artists who have shaped entire worlds through motion, while the Outstanding Dancer category, continuing its gender-free format, celebrates a wide and dynamic group of performers whose work has defined the season. The ensemble category further underscores the collaborative nature of dance, recognizing the collective force that transforms individual movement into something larger and more resonant.

Beyond the stage, the awards also embrace the continued evolution of dance on screen. Nominations for choreography in film and direction of dance documentaries reflect how movement extends beyond the theatre, finding new forms and audiences while maintaining its visceral impact. Whether captured live or through the lens, dance remains an immediate and powerful language.

This year’s ceremony, set to take place on May 18 at the NYU Skirball Center, will also honor the enduring legacy of performance with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Ann-Margret, a recognition that bridges generations of artistry. The announcement of Gotta Dance! as the recipient of the Douglas and Ethel Watt Critics’ Choice Award further expands the celebration, acknowledging work that exists outside traditional categories while leaving a lasting impression on the theatrical landscape.

At the heart of the Chita Rivera Awards is a mission that extends far beyond a single evening. Through the support of the NYC Dance Alliance Foundation and the Chita Rivera Training Grant, the awards invest directly in the future of dance, ensuring that the next generation of performers has the resources and opportunities to continue this art form’s evolution. That commitment adds another layer of meaning to the nominations, connecting the achievements of today with the possibilities of tomorrow.

As I think back on the performances that filled this season, what returns first is not a single image or step, but the sensation of movement itself, the way it builds, releases, and lingers in the body. These nominations capture that sensation, gathering it into a moment of recognition and anticipation. With the ceremony just ahead, the stage feels set once again, ready to carry that energy forward as we celebrate the artists who have kept this season in motion.
