The Calgary Group Chat: What your friends are talking about this week (Aug. 11)

11 August 20263 Mins Read

Welcome to the Calgary Group Chat, where we do all the scrolling so you don’t have to. We’ve got a little bit of everything for you this week, including upcoming events, summer plans to add to your calendar, local updates and a few things happening around the city that you might just want to know about.

So, grab a coffee, settle in and let’s get into what’s popping up in conversations around the city this week.

What’s new, Calgary?

Laneige is coming to Calgary with a pop-up packed with free beauty treats

First up, Laneige is bringing its Hydration Station to Calgary next month. The popular skincare brand is setting up a pop-up at CF Chinook Centre on Sept. 12 and Sept. 13.

The first 500 visitors each day can snag a complimentary Laneige popsicle, plus there’ll be a vending machine stocked with deluxe samples. There will also be complimentary product engraving, and if you spend over $60 on Laneige products, you will receive a full-size Glaze Craze Tinted Lip Serum.

Calgary is setting the table for one giant community potluck

The Long Table Calgary is creating one giant dinner table for the community on Friday, Aug. 14. The evening includes a potluck dinner where everyone brings a dish to share with the people around them.

The idea is to bring Calgarians of different backgrounds together through food. You’ll get a chance to try something new, share a favourite dish and meet people from across the city, all while enjoying an outdoor dinner together.

Calgary skies are getting a little hazy

You may have noticed the city looking a little smoky lately, and these conditions are expected to continue intermittently around the Calgary area. And due to the city’s extremely dry conditions over the past few weeks, we are now under a fire advisory, so maybe keep those backyard flames contained for now.

Since fire restrictions can be different for each region across Alberta, make sure to check the rules for your specific destination if you’re heading out camping or planning a weekend outdoors.

One of Calgary’s most iconic music venues is turning 120 years old

Get ready to celebrate because The King Eddy is turning 120 years old, and you’re invited to the party. Eddy Fest is taking over the Calgary music venue with three days of live music, food, drinks and celebrations. The event will run from Friday, Aug. 14 to Sunday, Aug. 16, with performances from local and touring artists.

There are only a few more weeks left to hit Calgary’s outdoor pools

Good news for anyone trying to squeeze out every last drop of summer! Calgary’s outdoor pools will stay open through Labour Day weekend, with most locations wrapping up on Sept. 2, 2026. So you’ve still got time to grab your swimsuit and spend an afternoon with your besties before the season wraps up.

And that’s all for this week’s Calgary Group Chat. Hopefully we have you a few things to add to your calendar, a couple of reasons to get out of the house and maybe even a new pool day to plan.

Until next week, Calgary!
