The Calgary Group Chat: What your friends are talking about this week (May 5)

5 May 20264 Mins Read

I think it’s safe to say spring is officially here to stay in Calgary, and honestly, the city is finally starting to feel like it. The patios are filling up, the days are stretching a little longer, and there’s a solid lineup of things happening in the city right now.

So instead of sending five separate messages to the group chat, here’s everything in one place. What to eat, what to do, where to go, and all the things that everyone seems to be talking about right now.

What’s new, Calgary?

Banff Sunshine Village will now offer summer skiing this season

Skiing in summer? Yes, that’s actually happening. Thanks to a huge snow season, Sunshine Village is bringing back summer skiing and riding from June 20 to July 5, which means you can go straight from patio season in the city to fresh mountain turns on the same day.

According to Sunshine Village, the plan is to open Strawberry Express along with potentially another lift, giving people a rare chance to ski deep into summer. Sunshine Mountain Lodge will also be open to anyone looking for a full mountain escape rather than just a day trip.

Sukoshi Mart opens a new location in SouthCentre Mall

Over the weekend, Sukoshi Mart officially opened its newest location at SouthCentre Mall, bringing a whole new level of Asian skincare, beauty, and lifestyle products to South Calgary, including everything you’d usually have to order online or hunt down across the city.

I was lucky enough to attend their first grand opening at CrossIron Mills, so I knew this one would be good. And if you’re anything like me and absolutely love little trinkets and surprise boxes, this store is basically made for you.

Getting to Drumheller just got a whole lot easier.

If you have been putting off a trip to Drumheller because driving feels like too much of a hassle, Flixbus is here to change that.

A new FlixBus route launching May 14, connects Calgary straight to Drumheller, with easy stops at downtown and the Royal Tyrrell Museum, meaning you can basically show up without worrying about a car.

So consider this your sign to start making those plans to the dinosaur capital of the world!

Forgot to make Mother’s Day plans? You still have options

With Mother’s Day coming up this weekend, if you’re still scrambling for plans, Calgary has plenty of ways to make the day meaningful. My personal favourite is the candle-making workshops at Milkjar because they are so personalized and interactive, and you actually get to leave with something you made for yourself.

If you’re looking for something a little different, there are also historic walking tours at The Confluence, which are accompanied by high tea and plenty of family-friendly activities.

Shake Shack is officially set to open in the city this month

The wait is almost over! Shake Shack is officially set to open at CF Chinook Centre on Monday, May 11. The popular burger spot is known for its classic Shackburgers, crinkle-cut fries, and thick milkshakes.

Calgary has been getting quite a few new restaurant openings lately, but this one definitely feels like a big addition to the mix.

That’s a wrap on everything you should be sending to your group chat this week, from new openings and Mother’s Day plans to events popping up across the city; there is no shortage of ways to get out and explore the city this week.
