Humanity’s first and most consequential surrender is not to the drones or surveillance grids of cinematic appeal. Surrender occurs earlier, in the quiet outsourcing of cognition itself.
We trade the friction and discomfort of independent thought for the immediate fluency and serenity of algorithmic output. Prompting a large language model (LLM) yields polished summaries, coherent arguments, and the appearance of literacy – eroding the slower, demanding work of deep reading, sustained focus, original synthesis, and the capacity to hold complexity without premature resolution.
Expertise, once forged through the effort and uncertainty of trial and error, risks becoming performative veneer: the ability to generate or request fluent text mimics understanding without requiring its substance.

A growing body of research documents this pattern under the heading of cognitive offloading. When users repeatedly delegate reasoning, synthesis, or retrieval to generative AI, measurable declines appear in critical thinking effort, knowledge retention, and independent judgment.
One randomized study found that students who studied with unrestricted ChatGPT access scored significantly lower on delayed retention tests than those who studied without it (57% correct versus 68.5%).
Another line of research, including surveys of knowledge workers and experimental comparisons, links frequent AI tool use to reduced self-reported critical thinking effort and lower confidence in unaided analysis. Measurements of brain activity in essay-writing tasks have shown substantially reduced neural engagement in regions associated with creativity and information processing among ChatGPT users compared with search-engine or unaided groups.
Recent modelling frames LLM adoption itself in viral terms: social transmission can drive transitions from uncoupled to coupled to persistently dependent users, with the possibility of tipping points and runaway shifts toward population-level dependence and abrupt losses in cognitive competence. The pattern is not uniform. Strategic users who treat the model as a scaffold rather than a substitute fare better, but the dominant consumer behaviour is dependent offloading; handing over the core cognitive work.
To frame the same dynamic in physiological terms: just as cheap calories produce abundance while deskilling the body, cheap cognition produces fluent output while reducing the practice that builds and maintains intellectual musculature. When the tool is removed, performance often falls below the pre-tool baseline.
The wrapper is valued more than the contents.
The result is the illusion of competence and the loss of musculature to retain it. With output fungible for competence, the internal processes that once produced demonstrable competence atrophy. Younger users appear particularly susceptible, often accepting generated recommendations with limited, if any, verification.
Higher education levels offer partial protection through habits of cross-checking, yet even among knowledge workers the same inverse relationship appears between confidence in the AI and the effort invested in critical evaluation. The “Google effect” of remembering where to find information rather than the information itself is amplified: generative systems supply not only location but ready-made synthesis, analysis, and conclusion. What remains is a conversational, surface-level literacy that collapses the distinction between true expertise and algorithmic parroting.
Neither map nor territory have context.
Cocktail parties, once the gauntlet that separated the charlatan from the learned, now risk becoming Dunning-Kruger conventions.
This cognitive abdication creates practical dependency. Privacy and intellectual effort are casually forfeited for convenience. Everyday information environments already shape what most people encounter: algorithmic curation on major platforms, institutional consensus enforcement, and the rapid conversion of contested questions into “the science is settled.”
During peak COVID, deference to a narrow set of credentialed voices, the sidelining of lab-origin discussion, and the management of dissenting analysis illustrated how quickly independent scrutiny can be treated as hazard rather than necessity. Parallel dynamics appear in climate policy, where institutional pressure and social compliance mechanisms have narrowed acceptable debate and framed dissent as moral failure. In Canada, successive efforts at online content regulation (Bills C-11, C-18, and the proposed C-63 Online Harms framework), and episodes of financial de-platforming further demonstrate how administrative and corporate tools can constrain the information environment without requiring classical authoritarian architecture.
Parallel dynamics appear in Medical Assistance in Dying frameworks. Profound questions of suffering, capacity, and end-of-life choice risk reduction into procedural pathways and eligibility metrics. Assessment becomes increasingly administrative; the demand for deep, case-specific human judgment is eased by standardized criteria and documented checklists. The human element, while not eliminated, is streamlined as some bare minimum, check-box compliance, which really does more to shield the issue than bring it up front.
“Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience,” quipped Mark Twain.
That is perilous enough 1:1. At scale, we see either exhaustion against legions of the thinking dead or the sensible retreat into a shrinking refuge.
Everyday humanity shows limited sustained appetite for the kind of heroic cognitive resistance that would reverse these trends. Most people are not training for a prophesied lost battle no matter how many series and movies they watch. They are tired, time-constrained, and rationally responsive to tools that reduce immediate effort.
Equally, they are vulnerable to marketing gymnastics, dynamic engagement methods, and distraction economics. The fatalistic undertone visible in certain public reflections – acknowledging harsh realities while continuing to perform – highlights a more grounded observation: awareness of long odds does not reliably produce collective defiance.
It is excellent fodder for heroic films, which consistently reveal deeper truth – the dearth of heroes. Most coexist with continued participation in the systems that erode independent capacity.
We dull our own wits not through grand delusion but through accumulated, low-friction decisions. “I need Facebook to keep tab on friends and family” is a common refrain that persists and emboldens corporate behaviour. A manifesto emerges, proclaiming a future for everyone by a company uniquely able to achieve it, whose historical trends guarantee positive outcomes. The manifesto is aspirational, self-framed philosophy built to foreclose scrutiny by design. It is structurally incontestable.
Chesterton’s fences, the sagacity for their construction fading, are carelessly dismantled by those induced to forget them.
Mythologically, the image of the Aesir voluntarily disarming before the frost giants arrive, remains useful as metaphor rather than prophecy. The first victory of the emerging optimizers is not of dramatic seizure of control, but the muted rendering of thought itself as optional. Once populations accept surface fluency as sufficient and procedural metrics as adequate substitutes for judgment, later forms of domination become far less costly and difficult to impose.
Necessity then meets sufficiency. The baseline crisis is voluntary. The veneer feels like empowerment. The feeling is validated.
Forfeiture then achieves the precondition for everything that follows. And it will follow.
