The Hotel Guest Journey No Longer Starts with Google

24 July 20268 Mins Read

In Brief: The article argues that hotel guests are increasingly beginning their travel planning and booking journeys on alternative digital platforms rather than Google, urging hoteliers to adapt their marketing and distribution approaches accordingly.

For years, hospitality marketers built their digital strategies around a familiar assumption: when someone wanted to book a hotel, they opened Google, searched for a destination, compared a handful of properties, and made a decision.

That journey still exists, but it’s no longer the only path, or even the most common one.

Today’s travelers discover hotels through a growing mix of digital channels. They might save a destination from an Instagram Reel, watch neighborhood tours on TikTok, ask ChatGPT for recommendations, compare ratings on Google Maps, read reviews across multiple platforms, and browse a hotel’s website before finally making a reservation. The booking may still happen on the hotel’s website or an OTA, but the decision has already been shaped by dozens of interactions along the way.

For hotel owners, operators, and marketers, this shift requires a broader view of digital marketing. Success is no longer measured solely by where your property ranks on Google. It’s about creating a consistent, trustworthy presence wherever travelers are gathering information.

The Guest Journey Has Become Multi-Platform

Imagine a couple planning a long weekend in Charleston.

Their search may begin with a TikTok video showcasing hidden rooftop bars or a creator highlighting the city’s walkable historic district. Later that evening, one of them asks ChatGPT, “What are the best boutique hotels in Charleston within walking distance of King Street?” The AI suggests several options and explains what makes each property unique.

The next day, they open Google Maps to see exactly where those hotels are located. They compare guest ratings, browse recent photos, and scan reviews mentioning service, parking, and noise levels. Only after narrowing their options do they visit the hotels’ websites to compare rooms, amenities, and direct booking offers before making a reservation.

Business travelers often follow a similar path, just with different priorities. Someone attending a conference in Chicago may ask an AI assistant for hotels within walking distance of the convention center, verify locations on Google Maps, read reviews about Wi-Fi reliability and workspace comfort, then visit the hotel’s website before booking.

Neither traveler started with a traditional Google search, yet Google still played an important role. The difference is that Google has become one touchpoint among many instead of the starting point for every booking journey.

Every Digital Touchpoint Builds Confidence

A common misconception is that a hotel’s website is the primary factor influencing booking decisions. In reality, most travelers have already formed an opinion before they ever arrive there.

Consider what a prospective guest encounters while researching your property. Your Google Business Profile displays your location, hours, amenities, photos, and recent reviews. Instagram provides a glimpse into your guest experience through professionally captured content and user-generated posts. Review sites offer unfiltered feedback from previous guests. Local publications and destination blogs may mention your restaurant, rooftop bar, spa, or nearby attractions.

Each interaction answers a different question.

A traveler might visit your Instagram account to see whether your property feels modern and inviting. They may rely on Google Reviews to understand the consistency of your service. They may browse your website for room types, packages, and booking policies. Together, these touchpoints create an overall impression that is often more influential than any single marketing asset.

If one channel tells a different story from the others, uncertainty begins to creep in. A beautifully redesigned website loses some of its impact if the most recent Google Reviews mention maintenance issues or outdated guest rooms. Likewise, glowing reviews may not translate into bookings if your website still features years-old photography that no longer reflects the experience guests can expect.

AI is Becoming a Discovery Channel

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how travelers research destinations and hotels.

Instead of typing a series of keyword searches, many travelers now ask conversational questions like:

  • “What’s the best family-friendly resort in Scottsdale with a great pool?”
  • “Which luxury hotels in Napa are within walking distance of tasting rooms?”
  • “Where should I stay in Nashville if I want live music but don’t want to rent a car?”
  • “What’s a good hotel in Boston for a business trip near the Financial District?”

Rather than returning a page of blue links, AI tools synthesize information from many different sources and present a curated answer. They may reference your website, online reviews, travel publications, directory listings, and other publicly available information to explain why your hotel is a good fit.

This represents a meaningful shift. Visibility is becoming less dependent on optimizing for individual keywords and more dependent on having complete, accurate, and trustworthy information across the web.

Hotels that consistently publish helpful content, maintain up-to-date websites, earn positive guest reviews, and keep their business listings current are in a stronger position to appear in AI-generated recommendations because they provide more reliable information for AI systems to reference.

The Departments Behind Digital Visibility

One of the biggest misconceptions about digital marketing is that discoverability is the exclusive responsibility of the marketing team. In reality, every department influences what future guests see online.

Operations determine whether guests leave five-star reviews or describe disappointing experiences. Housekeeping standards, maintenance response times, and front desk interactions often become public feedback that prospective guests read before booking.

Revenue management plays a role as well. Competitive pricing, attractive packages, and thoughtful length-of-stay strategies influence whether guests perceive value when comparing your property against competitors.

Sales teams contribute by developing compelling group offerings, creating partnerships with local organizations, and generating content around meetings, weddings, and events that extend your property’s online presence.

Marketing brings these elements together by telling the story, maintaining digital channels, and ensuring the property’s messaging remains consistent across every platform.

The strongest commercial organizations recognize that marketing, revenue management, sales, and operations are interconnected. When those departments work together, the guest experiences greater consistency both online and on property.

Is Your Digital Presence Ready for Today’s Guest?

Rather than asking only, “How are our Google rankings?” hotels should be evaluating their digital presence through a broader lens.

What would an AI assistant say about your hotel today? How can you create a strategy that blends SEO and AEO?

If a traveler asked ChatGPT why they should stay at your property instead of the hotel next door, would the answer accurately reflect your strengths? Would it mention your newly renovated guestrooms, award-winning restaurant, exceptional meeting space, or walkable location?

Are your photos current? Are recent guest reviews consistent with the experience you’re trying to deliver? Does your website answer practical questions about parking, pet policies, dining options, and local attractions? Is your Google Business Profile complete and regularly updated?

These questions may seem simple, but together they determine how confidently a traveler moves from researching your hotel to booking it.

Looking Beyond the Booking

The guest journey doesn’t end once a reservation is confirmed.

Guests continue engaging with your property before arrival, during their stay, and after departure. Pre-arrival emails shape expectations. Mobile check-in experiences influence convenience. On-property interactions generate reviews, photos, and social media posts that become part of the next traveler’s research process.

A guest who shares a positive Instagram Story from your rooftop bar or leaves a detailed five-star review has become part of your marketing strategy, whether intentionally or not.

This creates a continuous cycle in which every guest helps influence future guests.

Final Thoughts

The modern hotel guest journey is more complex than it was just a few years ago, but it also presents more opportunities to build trust.

Travelers move fluidly between AI assistants, social media platforms, Google Maps, review sites, destination content, hotel websites, and booking engines. Each interaction contributes to their confidence in choosing a property.

The hotels that thrive in this environment won’t necessarily be those with the largest advertising budgets. They’ll be the ones delivering consistent information, authentic guest experiences, compelling storytelling, and strong operational execution across every channel where travelers are searching.

Google remains an important part of the booking journey. It’s simply no longer the beginning of every story. The hotels that recognize this shift today will be better positioned to earn the confidence, and ultimately the bookings, of tomorrow’s travelers.
