What’s new, Vancouver?

It’s getting a little smoky

Given how intense wildfire season can be (and certainly is this year), Vancouver has been blessed to not have smoky skies more often. But as of Tuesday, Aug. 4, it seems that our luck has run out. People on Reddit are sharing pictures of a red sun shrouded in wildfire smoke, and it’s looking a little dystopian.

“The strange thing is the air quality ratings are not bad,” says one Redditor.

“Can’t complain when the rest of the province is facing a literal hellscape,” adds another.

An iconic half marathon is back after six years

It’s no secret that Vancouver is a city where everyone runs, many via social run clubs. Half marathons are practically a part of the city’s cultural fabric at this point, and there’s none more iconic than the Lululemon SeaWheeze.

Back after six years this weekend, the two-day celebration is a highly coveted event headlined by John Summit at Stanley Park, though the half marathon and yoga at the park are equally in demand.

If you didn’t manage to snag a ticket, we’d keep our eye out for those reselling theirs, as it’s sure to be a massive summer vibe.

A free street festival is coming to Mount Pleasant

This weekend marks Pleasant Day Fest, a new tradition in Mount Pleasant that’s now in its second year, taking over Main Street and East 16th Avenue to East King Edward Street for a full day of family-friendly fun.

Some specific activations you can look forward to include the Hero’s Welcome Beer Garden, boozy slushies outside of the Acorn, an extended garden patio at Anh and Chi, and so much more.

Live music will play across four stages all day long. So if you’re craving the energy of a street festival like Khatsahlano, now is your chance to bring the party vibes to Main Street.

It’s always Pride at the Pony Room

Vancouver Pride festivities might have officially come to an end, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still LGBTQIA+ spaces that are buzzing with energy, great music, dancing, and inclusivity all year long.

Vancouver’s newly opened Pony Room is already a hotspot for live events, and they’re keeping the good times flowing with a cocktail and listening lounge atmosphere this Friday, Aug. 7, with no cover.
