Welcome Back, Kotter premiered on September 9, 1975, on ABC and ran for four seasons through 1979. Created by Gabe Kaplan and Alan Sacks, the sitcom followed wisecracking high school teacher Gabe Kotter, played by Kaplan, as he returned to his former Brooklyn high school to teach a class of underachieving students charmingly known as the “Sweathogs.”
The talented ensemble cast included Ron Palillo as Arnold Horshack, whose iconic laugh became television gold; Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs as Freddie “Boom Boom” Washington; Robert Hegyes as Juan Epstein; and John Travolta as the endlessly charismatic Vinnie Barbarino.
Kaplan’s dry one-liners, coupled with the chemistry of the ensemble cast, created some of the funniest and most heartfelt comedic moments of the 1970s, but there was no denying that John Travolta emerged as the show’s breakout star.
