This Alberta city has a canyon-style lazy river you can float through for free

8 June 20263 Mins Read

It’s not every day you find a summer spot in Alberta that’s free, easy to get to, and worth the drive, but Discovery Canyon in Red Deer fits the bill.

Along the Red Deer River is a canyon that turns into a natural swimming area every summer, where you can float on the water, spend time by the river, and beat the heat as the weather starts to warm up.

What to expect at the canyon

Located within the River Bend and Recreation Area, Discovery Canyon transforms into a lazy river during the summer months, featuring a shallow, canyon-style pool for floating and swimming. And the best part is that it’s completely free to visit!

According to River Bend and Recreation Area, one of the most popular ways to experience the canyon is with inner tubes. Visitors can either bring their own or rent one for a small fee to use the park’s tubes.

For families, there is also a nearby playground, making it easy to split time between the water and dry land. It adds a bit more variety to the day without leaving the park. There are also plenty of sandy areas along the shoreline for relaxing between swims.

And if you don’t feel like packing a full day’s worth of supplies, don’t worry. There are on-site amenities, including washrooms and a concession stand for food and drinks.

One important thing to note is that there are no lifeguards on duty, and the park operates on a use-at-your-own-risk basis, so be mindful and practice water safety.

What to know before you go

Discovery Canyon is open daily during the summer season, with hours running from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It’s about a two-hour drive from Calgary, making it an easy day trip if you’re looking to get out of the city.

Since this is a popular seasonal spot, it can get busy on warmer days, so arriving earlier in the day will help you secure parking.

If floating down a lazy river on a hot summer day while soaking up the sun sounds like your vibe, Discovery Canyon is definitely worth adding to your list this season. Not every plan needs to hurt your wallet this summer, and this is one of them.

When: Open daily until Sept. 7, 2026
Time: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: 3800 River Bend Dr., Red Deer County, Alta.
Cost: Free (tube rentals start at $7)
