This Alberta sunrise tour takes you to one of the most iconic views in the Rockies

17 July 20263 Mins Read

Waking up before sunrise is definitely not the easiest thing to do, but some views are worth setting the alarm for. The Moraine Lake Sunrise Tour gives visitors a chance to see one of Alberta’s most iconic views before the crowds arrive. Located in Banff National Park, Moraine Lake is known for its bright turquoise water and surrounding mountain peaks. And while the lake is stunning at any time of day, seeing it in the quiet morning hours is a completely different experience.

For those wondering what the early morning adventure actually looks like, here’s what to expect during the Moraine Lake Sunrise Tour.

What to expect during the sunrise tour

For anyone hoping to catch Moraine Lake when it’s nice and quiet, this tour takes care of the planning for you. According to Banff Tours, guests will be picked up around 3:45 a.m. from their designated pickup location in Banff before heading to Moraine Lake.

Along the way, a professional certified guide will educate you about the lake and the surrounding areas as you make your way into the mountains. And once you arrive at Moraine Lake, you’ll have time to take in the sunrise, snap photos and watch as the first beam of light hits the mountain peaks.

Since early mornings in the Rocky Mountains can be quite chilly no matter the season, the tour also includes hot tea, pastries, blankets and umbrellas to ensure that guests are comfortable while they’re enjoying the scenery.

The biggest perk of taking a guided tour is skipping the stress that comes with visiting the lake during the busy summer season. According to Parks Canada, Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round, so visitors need to use an approved shuttle, taxi, or tour company to reach the lake. So instead of figuring out the logistics yourself, the sunrise tour handles all the details.

Timing, pricing, and how to prepare

Before setting your alarm for the early morning adventure, there are a few things to know before you go. The tour is approximately five hours long, with pickup starting at 3:45 a.m. from designated locations in Banff. Pricing starts at $179 per person, and the tour includes transportation, a certified guide, and extras like tea and snacks.

Since you’ll be heading into the mountains before the sun comes up, dressing for the weather is key. Temperatures can be pretty chilly in the early morning, so wearing layers, bringing a warm jacket, and choosing comfortable shoes is a great idea.

While waking up before the sun is out isn’t everyone’s idea of a relaxing morning, Moraine Lake proves that some places are worth the early start.

When: Open from June until October, 2026
Time: Starts at 3:45 a.m.
Where: Pickup and drop-off at various Banff hotels
Cost: Starting at $179
