This Calgary pet store is home to exotic animals and a giant tortoise

6 March 20263 Mins Read

If you’re looking for a fun and unexpected outing in Calgary, Pisces Pet Emporium should absolutely be on your radar.

What started as a small fish store in 1975, run by teachers Peter and Ave in their backyard, has grown into Calgary’s largest pet store, which carries just about every pet supply imaginable.

But that’s not all, the shop is home to exotic animals, such as two marmoset monkeys and a giant sulcata tortoise, which have become very memorable residents of the store!

Walking throughout the store, visitors will find a variety of pet supplies like habitats and toys, along with aquariums filled with tropical fish, and plenty of adorable animals.

One of the highlights is the stunning koi pond located inside the shop, where guests can feed the fish for just 25 cents.

This feature has become a favourite for families and animal lovers who visit.

It doesn’t stop there; the shop is home to a giant sulcata tortoise named Mortoise!

Every Tuesday at 2 p.m., Mortoise takes a stroll around the store, giving residents the chance to see him up close, snap some photos, and ask all your tortoise-related questions.

At 16 years old, Mortoise is just getting started. Sulcata tortoises live to be over 100 years old on average!

Marmoset Monkeys

Mortoise isn’t the only resident that calls this store home. The shop also has a pair of marmoset monkeys who are sisters: Venus and Artemis.

The pair can often be seen exploring their enclosure or snacking on their favourite snack, super worms.

At eight and nine years old, these two are thriving, and you may even catch them striking a pose during your visit.

If exotic animals aren’t your thing, no problem! Pisces has plenty for cat lovers, too.

Check out the cat room, where playful cats are up for adoption through the Cats Home Foundation.

You will find plenty of cats playing with toys, climbing around, and cuddling up in cozy spots.

Whether you’re a devoted pet owner or just looking for a fun family outing, Pisces Pet Emporium has it all. From exotic animals like Mortoise the tortoise to sister monkeys Venus and Artemis, the store is truly a one-of-a-kind experience within the city.
