This Ontario town is dotted with rolling moraines, lush forests, and kettle lakes

12 March 20262 Mins Read

The hustle and bustle of Toronto can make us quickly forget that, just a car ride away, there are adorable, picturesque towns waiting to be explored. Stouffville is just under an hour from Toronto by car, and it’s a great place to check out for the day, boasting rolling moraines, lush forests, and kettle lakes.

The 404 will take you right to Stouffville from Toronto. As long as you don’t hit too much traffic, the drive should take you around 50 minutes.

The great outdoors

Stouffville has some interesting physical geography.

According to the town’s website, “Stouffville is traversed, largely west to east, by the Oak Ridges Moraine, an interlobate kame moraine deposited during the recession of two glacial lobes at the end of the last ice age, approximately 10,000 years ago.”

The moraine is made up of “variable sediment clasts,” which can range from sand to boulder-sized rock. The surface of the moraine is also home to numerous kettle lakes, created as large portions of the melting ice from the ice sheets broke off and melted in place, creating large sinkholes.

Three of the largest kettle lakes in the area include Musselman’s Lake, Island Lake and Preston Lake.

Large stretches of town are covered by the lush York Regional Forest, especially Stouffville’s north end.

Want to do more exploring? Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area is a popular spot in Stouffville known for its many trails.

The 10-kilometre trail system weaves through thick woodland landscapes, which look gorgeous as the fall colours start to roll in.

End your day in Stouffville at Gallucci Winery. This gorgeous spot really comes alive in the spring and summer, offering tastings and a full dine-in menu with options like pizzas, pastas, salmon, and short ribs (just to name a few).

Time to give Stouffville a visit!
