This Ontario town is home to North America’s oldest operating mail steamship

26 August 20263 Mins Read

Ontario’s small towns offer year-round charm, but they truly shine in the summer. One standout is Gravenhurst, a lakeside gem that promises sun-soaked adventure and classic cottage country vibes. If you need a reason to enjoy the last few weeks of summer, here’s one.

Playfully called “the gateway to Muskoka,” Gravenhurst has a rich history in the region, according to Discover Muskoka.

About two hours north of Toronto, this small town is close enough for a day trip, but with steamship cruises, beaches, museums and a lovely waterfront district to explore, you could easily turn your visit into a weekend getaway.

Everything to know before visiting Gravenhurst, Ont.

Where is Gravenhurst?

Gravenhurst is about a two-hour drive north of Toronto. The town was the first incorporated town in Muskoka, all the way back in 1887.

What is Gravenhurst known for?

The area was once heavily connected to the lumber industry, but tourism began to grow as that industry declined. And even back then, its now-popular wharf was a hub for transportation activities.

Today, Gravenhurst is known for its waterfront, steamship history and easy access to outdoor activities throughout Muskoka.

What can I do at Muskoka Wharf?

The 89-acre Muskoka Wharf is one of the main places you’ll want to explore. According to the Town of Gravenhurst, the location “offers great dining, shopping, history and heritage and is home to some of our Community’s signature events.”

Here you’ll find a stunning boardwalk trail along Lake Muskoka, docking for boats and pontoon aircraft, shops and lots of parking.

Can I take a steamship cruise?

Yes, you can! Gravenhurst is home to the oldest operating Steamship in North America, the RMS Segwun, as well as the Wenonah II.

Those ships, along with the area’s rich history, can be explored at the Muskoka Discovery Centre.

What are the best trails in Gravenhurst?

For those looking for more outdoor experiences, this region has lots of areas for hiking, biking, as well as swimming in summer.

“The Town of Gravenhurst has 13 parks, six beaches, and 10 recreational trails to meet your outdoor recreation needs,” shares its website.

One option is Brydons Bay Trail – a short, family-friendly trail that wanders through majestic red and white pine, but if you want views, you can check out Peninsula Trail, which also offers gazebos, benches, and places to enjoy the scenery.

It’s a popular destination in the summer, and with good reason.

So, whether you’re looking for a day trip adventure or looking for a few days in a scenic Ontario town with a rich history, Gravenhurst should definitely be on your list. It’s the perfect weather for it anyway!

Information and details were accurate as of Aug. 26, 2026. Check with the town and individual attractions before visiting.
