This tiny Alberta town has been a backdrop for major Hollywood movies

17 July 20263 Mins Read

Alberta is no stranger to Hollywood productions, but one small town in particular has become one of the province’s most recognizable filming locations. Fort Macleod’s historic streets, preserved buildings, and western charm have caught the attention of Hollywood producers over the years, with the southern Alberta community appearing as the backdrop for major film and TV productions. And while the town may seem quiet today, its streets have taken on countless roles over the years, bringing fictional places to life on screen.

Why filmmakers choose Fort Macleod

So, what makes Fort Macleod such a popular filming location? A lot of it comes down to history. The town’s Main Street has kept much of its historic character, with heritage buildings and storefronts that make it easy for productions to transform the area into another time and place.

According to Tourism Fort Macleod, 19 movies have been filmed in and around the community, including productions like Interstellar, Ghostbusters, Afterlife, and Let Him Go.

One of the town’s most iconic landmarks is the Empress Theatre, which has been operating for over a century. According to Tourism Fort Macleod, the theatre is one of Alberta’s oldest operating theatres and remains a major part of the community. Today, the theatre continues to host live performances, movie screenings, and events throughout the year. The venue has been featured in productions such as the television series Fargo and The Last of Us, thanks to its historic architecture.

Of course, the theatre isn’t the only landmark to make its way to the screen. The town’s biggest Hollywood moment was when it was featured in Brokeback Mountain, the 2005 drama starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Parts of the film were shot in and around southern Alberta, with Fort Macleod standing in as the fictional town of Riverton, Wyoming.

And Fort Macleod’s filming history doesn’t just include its historic streets. More recently, the town’s famous Igloo Drive-In got its own moment on the big screen. The roadside restaurant has been a local favourite since 1967, with its giant snow-cone statue and retro charm making it hard to miss. The spot was recently featured in Reminders of Him, the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, adding another memorable credit to the town’s growing list of on-screen appearances.

Beyond its Hollywood credits, Fort Macleod is a town rich in history and character, with plenty of reasons to make the trip. Visitors can walk the same streets that have appeared on screen, explore local landmarks like the Empress Theatre and the Igloo Drive-In, and see firsthand why this small town has become such a memorable backdrop for stories both on and off the screen.
