Frontmezzjunkies reports: The TIFF Awards Have Been Announced

Today, while I was sitting in the theatre watching the magnificently entertaining and engaging “Wild Horse Nine“, TIFF announced its 2026 People’s Choice Award winners, and I couldn’t be more thrilled for the films and filmmakers receiving the honours. I saw many of the winning films during the festival, and came away loving them for very different reasons. A few of my own festival favourites included “La Bola Negra“, “Elsinore“, “Sunburn“, “I Play Rocky“, “The Assassin(s)“, and “Being Heumann“. Watch for my reviews of those films coming later this week, but for now, here is the full list of the films and filmmakers taking home honours as the 51st Toronto International Film Festival comes to a close.

The People’s Choice Awards Presented by Rogers

The People’s Choice Award, presented by Rogers, went to La Bola Negra, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi.

The first runner-up was I Play Rocky, directed by Peter Farrelly, with Being Heumann, directed by Siân Heder, named second runner-up.

The International People’s Choice Award went to Elsinore, directed by Simon Stone. Possible Love, directed by Lee Chang-dong, was first runner-up, with The Assassin(s), directed by Hur Jin-ho, named second runner-up.

The People’s Choice Documentary Award went to Darlene Love: I Know Where I’ve Been, directed by Barry Avrich. Black Sunflowers, directed by James Marcus Haney, was first runner-up, followed by The Ultra Runner, directed by Mila Aung-Thwin.

The People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award went to Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney, directed by Matthew Rankin. The Spiral, directed by Paolo Strippoli, was first runner-up, with Arrested Memory, directed by SABU, named second runner-up.

Launched in 1978, the TIFF People’s Choice Award celebrates a film selected by the Festival’s public audience. The award now spans four categories: overall, International, Documentary, and Midnight Madness.

Platform Prize

The Platform Prize, TIFF’s only juried programme, went to Angh, directed by Theja Rio of India.

Launched in 2015 and inspired by Jia Zhang-ke’s groundbreaking film, the Platform Prize recognizes filmmakers with strong directorial vision and distinctive storytelling. This year, the Platform programme expanded to 12 films, with an international five-member jury selecting the winner of the $20,000 CAD prize.

The 2026 jury was led by President Pablo Trapero, alongside Amma Asante, Sylvia Chang, Luc Déry, and Albert Lee.

In a historic first this year, winning TIFF’s Platform Prize gives a non-English-language film direct eligibility for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards, alongside top winners from five other qualifying festivals.

The Platform jury also awarded an Honourable Mention to Brace Your Heart (Garrat Du Váimmu), directed by Amanda Kernell of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, and Bulgaria.

Short Cuts Awards

The Short Cuts Award for Best International Short Film went to MAMMALIA, directed by Elia Kalogianni of Greece and the Netherlands. The jury also awarded an Honourable Mention to The Spectacular Death of Prisca, directed by Kaelo Iyizoba of Nigeria.

The Short Cuts Award for Best Canadian Short Film went to Fight Kid, directed by Michael Del Monte. The Honourable Mention went to Almost Pink, directed by Justine Prince.

The Short Cuts Award for Best Animated Short Film went to Into The Betaverse, directed by Varun Raman and Tom Hancock of the United Kingdom. The Honourable Mention went to Terminal, directed by Alexandre Siqueira of Portugal, Spain, and France.

Each of the three Short Cuts winning films receives a bursary of $10,000 CAD.

FIPRESCI and NETPAC Awards

The FIPRESCI Prize, the International Critics’ Prize dedicated to emerging filmmakers and awarded to a debut feature having its World Premiere in TIFF’s Discovery programme, went to Ancestors, directed by David Turpin of Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The NETPAC Award, presented by the Network for the Promotion of Asian Pacific Cinema, went to Thirteen in Gaza, directed by Hosam Abu Dan of Palestine.

Canadian Awards

The Best Canadian Discovery Award went to Smudge the Blades, directed by Cody Lightning. The award recognizes emerging filmmakers whose first or second feature brings a distinctive voice to the Canadian film landscape. The winner receives a $10,000 CAD cash prize.

The jury also awarded an Honourable Mention to The Black Box is Orange, directed by Yuula Benivolski.

The Best Canadian Feature Film Award went to Sunburn, directed by Serville Poblete. The Honourable Mention went to Man in Motion: The Rick Hansen Story, directed by Adrian Buitenhuis.

The Best Canadian Feature Film Award comes with a $10,000 CAD cash prize.

And That’s a Wrap on TIFF51

Over the past 11 days, TIFF presented 294 films from 72 countries and welcomed more than 800 talent across 98 red carpets. The Festival hosted 2,000 accredited media, close to 7,000 TIFF: The Market delegates, and 279 directors from around the world.

And now, with the awards announced and the 51st Toronto International Film Festival coming to a close, I’m left thinking about all those films I sat in dark theatres to discover over these past 11 days. I was literally watching Wild Horse Nine when the news arrived, which feels like a wonderfully TIFF way to learn that the Festival’s awards had been handed out. I’m especially happy to see La Bola Negra, Elsinore, Sunburn, I Play Rocky, The Assassin(s), and Being Heumann represented among the winners and runners-up, because these are films I connected with during my own TIFF journey. Now it’s time to start putting those reactions into words. Watch for the reviews later this week.
