Toronto Zoo welcomes two fluffy baby brother highland cows with adorable names

27 August 20253 Mins Read

The Toronto Zoo’s newest family members are causing quite a stir due to their fluffy adorableness!

A bonded pair of nine-month-old Highland cows has just joined the zoo, and they’re already known for their shaggy manes and bangs.

Just arriving earlier this month, the cows have been getting used to their environment after officially moving into their digs near the Eurasia Wilds Zoomobile station.

Charismatically cute and fluffy beyond belief, these little guys (and half-brothers) have already stolen the hearts of visitors and have now been officially named.

Say hello to Blue and Jay!

To celebrate the Toronto Blue Jays’ major winning streak, holding the #1 spot in the American League East standings, the zoo has joined the crowd to support our players!

“One of our Toronto Zoo priorities is to provide opportunities for community engagement, sparking curiosity and a love for nature. Conservation is a team sport, we need more players, and now we are hoping that naming these two animals after our beloved Blue Jays provides us with another way to get the community excited about two of our City’s great passions — baseball and conservation,” said CEO of the Zoo, Dolf DeJong.

Jay, the smaller red-coated cow, has been described as “very brave” and the first brother to participate in training and snacks, while Blue, the large and blonde one, is more shy but quickly warming up.

“Sometimes they will even get a case of the ‘zoomies’ and run after the wheelbarrow while they are cleaning,” said the Toronto Zoo in a news release. How cute!

Since they’ve been brought to the zoo just two weeks, these banged-cows are doing very well with hand feeding and target training, while staff are continuing to work on haltering.

Once fully used to their home, Blue and Jay may be part of casual encounters with visitors, as part of the zoo’s ambassador animal walking program. But for right now, the little guys are content with grazing in their paddock and dazzling guests.

As a domestic breed, Highland Cows originate from the Scottish Highlands and western islands of Scotland,  and are one of the oldest registered cattle in the world.

Known for their wavy coats, gentle disposition, and strong ability to adapt to harsh climates, Highland Cows are sweet, gentle giants.

It doesn’t get cuter than this! Visit the Toronto Zoo to say hello to baby Blue and Jay.
