If you live in Toronto, there’s a good chance you know someone who went to the University of Toronto, or maybe you went there yourself. Located in the heart of Canada’s busiest city, the school is known for having some of the best programs in the country. Over the years, U of T has earned quite a few honours, and the list keeps growing, as Time just recognized the institution among the World’s Best Universities.
According to Time, this year’s ranking “places emphasis on the extent to which students achieve extraordinary success, for instance, in patenting new inventions or rising to leadership roles in business.” Lists like these help the team understand where students are most likely to achieve success and contribute most to society as the world continues to change.
Methodology
In order to be considered in the list, among the top-performing universities worldwide, schools had to meet a number of conditions.
Eligibility criteria required institutions to be older than three years, offer bachelor’s degrees, and enroll more than 2,000 students. According to TIME, universities were shortlisted if they met at least one of the following conditions:
- At least one of the highly cited researchers, according to Clarivate, is among their faculty,
- They are among the most renowned and frequently mentioned institutions, or
- They applied through the open call to action published on TIME.com.
The analysis is then built around three key pillars: academic capacity and performance, innovation and economic impact, and global engagement.
Institutions then receive scores on each pillar to finally achieve a final score to make the ranking. The full methodology can be found online.
Among Canadian contenders, U of T stood out, securing the highest national ranking. According to the results, the Canadian university scored 75.78 out of 100
It ranked 24th place out of 500 schools. What a massive accomplishment.
Of course, it wasn’t the only Canadian school to make the list. The University of British Columbia came in 33rd with a score of 71.56, the University of Alberta came in 73rd with a score of 65.76, and McMaster University came in 90th with a score of 63.04.
