As is tradition, Ubisoft is playing catch-up with leaks concerning its games. The company has told fans to expect new announcements about the Ghost Recon franchise next month on the series’ 25th anniversary. This comes the same day that leaks reportedly revealed some of what Ubisoft will share.

On Monday, the official Ghost Recon X account made its first post in five months to address the leaks.

“We know some of you saw some updates,” the post reads, “We’ll have more to say on the 6th of August when we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Ghost Recon. Intel coming soon.” Prior to this post, it was reported that a definitive edition of 2017’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is planned for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Leaks indicate the updated version will include a new mission.

The last entry in the Ghost Recon franchise was 2019’s Breakpoint. Many fans of the series saw it as a step backward from Wildlands, though the game has received numerous post-release updates that have turned it into a better game than it was at launch. Ubisoft planned for the next entry in the series to be a massive free-to-play battle-royale-inspired game titled Frontline. After heavy criticism of the game’s reveal trailer and closed beta, Ubisoft announced in 2022 that it had canceled development on Frontline.

Since Frontline‘s cancellation, there has been no official word on a new entry in the Ghost Recon series. There have, however, been plenty of leaks and rumors about what Ubisoft has in store. Reports indicate that the next title is codenamed Project OVR and has been going through a troubled development for years. Leaks suggest Project OVR will move away from the open-world looter-shooter style of Wildlands and Breakpoint and return to the series’ roots as a more grounded tactical shooter. The game will also return to a first-person perspective. Ubisoft has been undergoing a major restructuring in recent years that has seen studio closures, project cancellations, and multiple rounds of layoffs.
