In a move that feels like a total game-changer for international travel, United Airlines just announced the United Relax Row—a dedicated section of economy seats that transform into a flat, couch-like bed.
If you’ve ever looked longingly at the lie-flat pods in Polaris while walking back to row 42, this is officially the smart-splurge solution we’ve been waiting for.
“Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for more space and comfort, and this is one way we can deliver that for them,” said Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer said in a statement.

The concept is brilliant in its simplicity: a row of three economy seats outfitted with special leg rests that flip up at a 90-degree angle. Once they’re up, they meet the seat cushion to create a continuous, mattress-like surface. It probably won’t be as pricey as a $5,000 Polaris pod, but it will definitely be a step up from a standard seat selection fee—making it the ultimate strategic upgrade for travelers who want to sleep like a pro without the first-class bill.
The Bottom Line
This follows a major trend we’re seeing in 2026: airlines are finally realizing that economy travelers value comfort just as much as the folks in first class. Between this and Jet Blue’s more ‘affordable’ first class, it’s a very good year to be a savvy traveler who knows how to spot a high-value upgrade.
