United is Turning Economy Seats Into a Bed and We’re Obsessed

25 March 20264 Mins Read

And now, for some why didn’t anyone think of this before? news, the upgrade of the decade has just been announced for anyone who has ever tried to survive a 10-hour flight in a middle seat. In a move that feels like a total game-changer for international travel, United Airlines just announced the United Relax Row—a dedicated section of economy seats that transform into a flat, couch-like bed.

If you’ve ever looked longingly at the lie-flat pods in Polaris while walking back to row 42, this is officially the smart-splurge solution we’ve been waiting for.

“Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for more space and comfort, and this is one way we can deliver that for them,” said Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer said in a statement.

The concept is brilliant in its simplicity: a row of three economy seats outfitted with special leg rests that flip up at a 90-degree angle. Once they’re up, they meet the seat cushion to create a continuous, mattress-like surface. It’s essentially a “couch in the sky” where you can actually stretch out, nap or—if you’re traveling with kids—create a safe little play zone.

United is the first North American carrier to offer this (they actually secured the exclusive rights to the design), and they aren’t skimping on the amenities to go with it. When you book a Relax Row, you get:

  • A custom-fitted mattress pad
  • Specially sized “couch” blankets and extra pillows
  • A Children’s Travel Kit (featuring a very cute Sesame Street collaboration)
  • A plush toy for the little ones

Who Is This For?

As someone who’s mastered the art of Premium Economy perks on a Basic Economy budget, I see this as the ultimate hack for three types of travelers:

  1. The Cuddly Couple: You can book the full row of three and basically have a private lounge for two.
  2. The Solo Splurger: If you want a bed but don’t want to drop $5,000 on a Business Class ticket, booking a Relax Row is the ultimate clever upgrade.
  3. The Family Survivalist: If you’re traveling with a toddler, having a flat surface means they can actually sleep, which means you might actually get to watch a movie.

When Can We Book—and How Much Is It?

While I wish I could use this for my trip to Disneyland Paris this week, we’ll have to wait just a little longer. The United Relax Row is slated to launch in 2027.

United plans to roll this out on more than 200 of their widebody “dream” planes (the Boeing 787 and 777) by 2030. You’ll find these special rows tucked right between the standard Economy cabin and United Premium Plus, with about 12 sections available per plane.

So, the big question: How much is this “couch in the sky” going to cost? While United hasn’t released a specific price list just yet, they are positioning the Relax Row as a bridge between standard Economy and Premium Plus. Industry insiders expect it to function similarly to the “Skycouch” model used by Air New Zealand, where you typically pay a discounted fee to “buy out” the remaining seats in your row.

It probably won’t be as pricey as a $5,000 Polaris pod, but it will definitely be a step up from a standard seat selection fee—making it the ultimate strategic upgrade for travelers who want to sleep like a pro without the first-class bill.

The Bottom Line

This follows a major trend we’re seeing in 2026: airlines are finally realizing that economy travelers value comfort just as much as the folks in first class. Between this and Jet Blue’s more ‘affordable’ first class, it’s a very good year to be a savvy traveler who knows how to spot a high-value upgrade.
