We got a first look at North America’s first indoor triathlon centre in Edmonton

16 January 20264 Mins Read

Edmonton is getting a new sports and recreation facility, which also happens to be North America’s first indoor triathlon centre, and we got a first look at the spectacular facility.

Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre is a modern facility that cost about $153.4 million, and it is holding its grand opening this month. It includes the Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre as well as a 333m running track, 50m pool, multi-use indoor courts, a bouldering wall, a unique urban court, a fitness centre, various functional training spaces, training studios, an indoor playground, a cycling track, and much, much more.

It’s going to open its doors on Jan. 27 to the public, but we’ll have to wait until Jan. 30 for its official grand opening with remarks from city officials.

The good thing, though, is we didn’t have to wait to look inside. So, let’s take a peek at what this new facility is offering.

The exterior

This large facility sits between the Telus World of Science and Ross Sheppard School. Its vast and mighty presence makes itself known, and it’s absolutely gorgeous when the sun hits it just right.

And now the interior

When you first walk through the main entrance and in through the gates, there’s a huge open concept area that awaits you.

Here, there are steps with outlets for plugging in phones and relaxing in the public space. Not to mention the play area for all ages, and a generally great space for anyone looking to get out of their house and into the community.

In addition to this, there are two basketball hoops and a large area for games to be played and hoops to be shot.

Just behind the steps is the facility’s very own rock-climbing wall, which folks are free to use.

This open concept area is stunning, with many multi-use options for people of many ages and abilities.

Surrounding the area is the velodrome, which is situated on the second floor. You can see the cyclists swiftly go around the loop, which is a wonderful addition to an already amazing facility.

This open concept design works beautifully in their favour, and the noise level isn’t bad, contrary to what you’d believe with almost no solid soundproofing between activities.

First-floor fitness centre and multi-purpose rooms

This fitness centre is not a joke — it’s massive.

With an extensive amount of equipment and space, there is no question where all the gym-bros and athletes will come to work out for the rest of their time in Edmonton.

The second-floor amenities

When you take a step upstairs, you can find courts as well as the exciting velodrome and running track.

The velodrome is one of the very few in Canada. When we went for our first look, there were already cyclists using the steep-looking track with excellent ability. It was fascinating to watch.

This four-lane running track circles around the velodrome with beautiful views of Coronation Park itself.

Gazing out the window, you can get views of the Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium and even the Telus World of Science. Even just the park, when the snow finally melts, will be a gorgeous sight to behold.

And don’t forget: the new Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre

Edmonton also renovated the old aquatic centre, which had issues with lighting, and created a massive, bright, open concept space for swimming.

Not only does it feature an eight-lane 50m pool, but it also has a hot tub, sauna, steam room, and both universal and gendered changing rooms.

There’s also a cold-plunge pool, which can be booked in 15-minute increments for those looking to relax with some hydrotherapy.

Are you excited for the new facility? We absolutely can’t wait.

Mark your calendar for Jan. 27 and 30, and get ready to hop in the pool, lift some weights, and go for a run in this new recreation centre.

When: Opening to the public Jan. 27, 2026
Where:
11160 135th St. NW, Edmonton, Alta.
