Where was ‘You, Me and Tuscany’ filmed? The glorious real-life filming locations behind the Regé-Jean Page and Halle Bailey romcom, Canada Reviews

8 April 20266 Mins Read

Regé-Jean Page changed the way we look at spoons forever as the duke in Bridgerton. Now, he’s repeating the trick in new romcom You, Me, & Tuscany. This time, with a tomato.

Produced by Will Packer, the mastermind behind comedy hits including Girls Trip, Ride Along and Think Like a Man, and directed by Kat Coiro (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Modern Family), the film follows culinary school dropout Anna (The Little Mermaid’s Halle Bailey) on her once-in-a-lifetime trip to Italy. But things start to get complicated when she sneaks into the villa of a former fling (Lorenzo de Moor), pretends to be his fiancée, while frolicking between the vines with his dishy winemaker cousin (Page).

If this sounds like your ideal vacation, these are the real-world filming locations you can visit.

Claire’s hotel was shot at Six Senses Rome

After losing her house-sitting job, Anna enjoys mates’ rates at the NYC hotel where her BFF Claire works. It’s here she first meets ‘spicy white boy’ Matteo, an Italian real estate investor who makes Casanova look like an amateur. Flirting over a few drinks at the hotel bar, he asks Anna if she’s staying at the hotel. When she says no, he doesn’t miss a beat, asking, ‘Would you like to?’ The next-day debrief takes place in one of the swanky bedrooms where the gals spill the tea over a carb buffet of pancakes, French toast and waffles.

These scenes were shot at Six Senses Rome, a 5-star hotel which opened in 2023. Rooms start at approximately €1,300 per night.

Matteo’s family villa was filmed in Pienza and Rome

After that ill-fated one-night-stand at a swanky Big Apple hotel with Matteo, Anna flies to Tuscany for a slice of la dolce vita. Confronted with a sea of ‘no vacancy’ signs due to the local summer festival (‘Tuscany’s answer to the Superbowl’), she decides to squat at Matteo’s family villa. But she’s caught by his mother (Isabella Ferrari) and has to pretend to be his fiancée to avoid a night in the slammer.

Most of the film’s exterior shots, including a failed drainpipe escape, were filmed on a family-owned vineyard near Pienza. Interiors, featuring a four-poster bed, exposed stone walls, a smattering of modern art, and the latest range of Smeg appliances, were built at Rome’s famous Cinecittà Studios, where iconic movies like Roman Holiday, Ben-Hur and Gangs of New York were filmed.

Michael’s winery is the Sesti estate in Montalcino

Michael (Page) is Matteo’s ‘cousin-brother’ who takes over the family business when Matteo flees Tuscany for the rat race. It’s at the family winery where Anna and Michael get up to fermented-grape-fueled mischief. Michael has his Mr Darcy moment when the estate’s sprinklers soak his shirt, and Anna gets flirty with her fake beau’s sort-of-sibling during a wine tasting.

Set on the southern slopes of Montalcino, one of Italy’s most renowned winemaking regions, the Sesti estate in Val d’Orcia, a 13-hectare family-run vineyard, stands in for Michael’s vineyard. Outdoor shots were captured in the early morning and during golden hour. As part of an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Halle Bailey shared that the wine-tasting scene saw grape juice standing in for the real deal.

The local town is the Renaissance city of Pienza

When Anna arrives in Tuscany, she’s befriended by eccentric taxi driver Lorenzo (Marco Calvani), who shows her the sights. He drives her between the rolling hills of Val d’Orcia and almost to the altar of the Renaissance Cattedrale dell’Assunta.

One of the town’s delis is also where Anna first meets Michael. She accuses him of stealing the sandwich she travelled more than 4,000 miles to taste, which escalated into a sexually-charged spat over schiacciata. One thing leads to another, and before you know it, he’s seducing her in a field with the help of a tomato. L’amore, eh?

These scenes were shot in Pienza, a small UNESCO hilltop town in southern Tuscany, famous for cacio di Pienza (pecorino cheese). Many of its street names reference romance, including Via dell’Amore and Via del Bacio. The English Patient and a pair of Franco Zeffirelli films, Romeo and Juliet and Tea with Mussolini, have also used the area as a backdrop.

The barrel race was filmed outside of Rome

The film’s funniest scene takes place during the summer festival’s barrel race. With familial and romantic tensions reaching boiling point, it’s while rolling 80kg wine barrels uphill through the town that Michael and Matteo first come to blows.

The competition is based on Bravio delle Botti, Tuscany’s answer to The Hunger Games.  The annual sporting challenge sees duos from eight historic districts compete while dressed like court jesters. The real competition takes place in Montepulciano on August 31 each year, but the scene was shot in an olive grove outside of Rome.

The driving scenes were filmed on Val d’Orcia

A love letter to food, wine, and romantic deception, You, Me and Tuscany is also a rallying cry for the great open road. Michael chauffeurs Anna to and from his vineyard in a vintage Triumph TR6 and a three-wheeled Piaggio Ape, while Anna goes full throttle in a red Maserati to make a grand romantic gesture. Even Lorenzo’s tiny Fiat Topolino has a strange sex appeal under the Tuscan sun.

Most of the landscapes were shot in Val d’Orcia, a region famous for its cypress-lined roads and for producing Brunello di Montalcino, one of the world’s most prestigious wines. Twilight: New Moon and Gladiator were filmed here. Coiro, an Italian-American told The Hollywood Reporter that she wanted to show off ‘the whole gamut of Italian vehicles’, even sneaking in a cheeky wink to the ubiquitous Vespa.
