You can now bike or walk across the Gordie Howe International Bridge for free, but who will?, Canada Reviews

6 August 20262 Mins Read

Not that it is on the top of Toronto travel lists right now, but cyclists and pedestrians can now cross the Canada-U.S. border entirely under their own power thanks to the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge’s new multi-use path.

The 2.5-kilometre, toll-free path officially opened this week, making it the first international border crossing to become part of the Trans Canada Trail network. The route connects Windsor’s Great Lakes Waterfront Trail directly with Detroit’s Iron Belle Trail and Great Lakes Way, creating a fun active transportation link between Ontario and Michigan.

The bridge has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons, most of them centred around Donald Trump and trade disputes. But, at some point, things will change and it will be a nice thing.

“The Gordie Howe International Bridge brings a beautiful new addition to the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, part of the national Trans Canada Trail, creating an exciting new connection that reflects the shared spirit of the Great Lakes region,” says Marlaine Kohler, executive director, Waterfront Regeneration Trust. “This crossing strengthens ties between communities, encourages active transportation, and helps more people experience the natural and cultural heritage that makes the Great Lakes so extraordinary. It stands as a model for future international connections across our shared Great Lakes.”

For Toronto cyclists looking for a cool new road trip or cycling adventure, the new crossing opens the door to exploring two countries by bike without ever getting behind the wheel. Riders can travel to the area and then pedal from Windsor into Detroit using the dedicated 12-foot-wide path, with separate Canadian and U.S. border processing facilities built specifically for pedestrians and cyclists. A valid passport is still required to cross.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge opened to vehicle traffic on July 27.

On the Ontario side, the trail provides access to popular local attractions including the Essex County wine region and the new Ojibway National Urban Park. Across the border, cyclists can connect directly to popular routes such as the Detroit RiverWalk, the Joe Louis Greenway and Michigan’s extensive Iron Belle Trail.

“This new landmark will create incredible opportunities for active transportation and trail tourism throughout southern Ontario and beyond,” said Mathieu Roy, CEO of Trans Canada Trail, in a statement announcing the opening.
