You can paddle through B.C.’s glowing waters on this guided bioluminescence tour

21 August 20262 Mins Read

If you’ve ever looked at the shoreline and thought the water was tinged with a bright blue sparkle, you might have been witness to the spectacular natural phenomenon known as bioluminescence.

Last year, we talked to UBC professor and marine biologist Christopher Harley (Department of Zoology and Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries), who shared that late summer and early fall are typically the best times of year to see the ocean’s magical blue glow.

“Bioluminescence is light made by living things,” Harley explained. “The sparkly glow we sometimes see in the ocean is caused by tiny, single-celled creatures in the plankton called Noctiluca, which means ‘night light.’”

Destination Greater Victoria adds that the captivating chemical reaction occurs within various marine and terrestrial organisms, including glow worms, fireflies, jellyfish, octopus, fish, sharks, and more.

Guided bioluminescence tours in Brentwood Bay

Ready to experience bioluminescence with your own two eyes? You can immerse yourself in the magic on these guided paddle tours in Brentwood Bay every spring, summer, and fall. And with August and September being such peak times for the phenomenon, it’s a great time to book your journey.

Situated near Victoria’s famed Butchart Gardens, the tours allow visitors to get a front-row seat to the water’s light show, as well as a very scenic SUP paddle session.

How long are the tours offered in 2026?

The tours run from April to October every year. Currently, there are tours available through Oct. 27, with plenty of spots available for most weekday and weekend trips.

What time are the tours?

Tours start between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., depending on when you book, and last approximately two hours.

How much do the tours cost?

Adults can paddle their way through the glowing water for $74.20, and children under 13 years old can paddle for $68.90.

Where do the tours leave from?

Participants of the bioluminescence tours meet at 819 Verdier Ave.
