Live-Action ‘Gundam’ Movie Returns to Netflix With Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo

Netflix is set to be the home of the upcoming live-action Gundam movie (again!). The new movie with stars Noah Centineo and Sydney Sweeney attached is eyeing a production start this year, and a new report suggests Netflix will be the streaming home for it.

For long-term followers of Netflix’s development cycle, you’ll know this is a full-circle moment. Netflix first announced the project, now 8 years ago, in July 2018, with Legendary Pictures co-producing the project, although details were limited at the time. In subsequent updates, we learned more about the movie, including that in April 2021, Netflix officially confirmed director Jordan Vogt-Roberts had boarded the project, and that concept art (see below) was unveiled.

There were plans to film in 2023, but they were ultimately pushed back. In October 2024, the project was announced as no longer moving forward at Netflix, with Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle joining as executive producer and director, with Legendary Entertainment still producing.

Since then, we’ve lost track of the project, but we should’ve been monitoring it. Throughout 2025, we received two major casting announcements: Sydney Sweeney was tied to the project in April, and Noah Centineo was reportedly in talks as of November.

Now, the project has come full circle with Deadline reporting that sources are telling them that Netflix is officially on board for the project as distributor, although they’ve yet to get firm confirmation from Netflix or Legendary.

Filming for the movie is expected to begin as early as March 2026 and run through June, with Australia and the United Kingdom cited as the two filming locations. But those are highly subject to change, given that the movie was originally supposed to shoot in 2025.

First introduced in 1979 with Mobile Suit Gundam, the long-running and influential Japanese sci-fi franchise defined a genre for decades to come. Set across multiple timelines but most famously in the Universal Century era, Gundam stories center on massive humanoid machines known as mobile suits used as frontline weapons in complex interplanetary wars between Earth and its space colonies.

Netflix notably licensed many of the earlier shows for a limited period and released two titles exclusively: Hathaway and Requiem for Vengeance.
