This short hike near Calgary offers stunning views of aquamarine water in the mountains

23 March 20263 Mins Read

Spring is officially here, which means it’s time to hit the trails, and if you’re looking for a short yet seriously stunning hike, Grassi Lakes in Canmore should be at the top of your list.

With bright aquamarine water, forested trails, and amazing mountain views, this trail has a little something for everyone.

Why it’s worth the visit

There’s a reason Grassi Lakes is one of Canmore’s most popular hikes; it checks off all the boxes. At just 4 km roundtrip, it’s an easy outing for families and kids, and it usually takes around one to two hours, depending on how often you stop for pictures.

Right now, only the easy Upper Trail is open as the Interpretive Trail will be closed until June 15, 2026.

Along the Interpretive Trail, you will find signs that highlight the history of Lawrence Grassie, and possibly see hidden pictographs dispersed throughout the cliffs.

In the summer, you can catch Route 12 of the Roam Transit Bus from Downtown Canmore, which drops you right at the trailhead and also stops at Quarry Lake and the Canmore Nordic Centre for more exploring.

One of the coolest things about Grassi Lakes is its bright turquoise colour, which comes not from tropical waters but from sunlight reflecting off “rock flour,” a fine silt left behind by glaciers. It’s absolutely beautiful to look at, but swimming is a no-go because the lakes are ecologically sensitive.

The lakes are named after Lawrence Grassi, an Italian immigrant and Canadian Pacific Railway worker who became a famous trail builder and mountaineer in the Canmore area.

The stunning lakes and quiet forest paths make this a spring adventure worth taking. Even though it’s a popular spot, there’s plenty to enjoy if you come prepared. Arriving early in the day to snag a parking spot is recommended, and make sure to wear proper footwear as pathways may be slippery. Since you’ll be in bear country, it’s important to take proper measures, carry bear spray, and make lots of noise while hiking.

Whether you’re exploring with friends or taking some time alone, this trail offers unforgettable views and a great opportunity to connect with nature this spring.
