Auditions (Edmonton): Jesus, Mary, and Jo – Three-Ring Sucker Punch, Theater News

1 April 20264 Mins Read

Three-Ring Sucker Punch is looking for actors for their upcoming production of Jesus, Mary, and Jo at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival (August 13-23, 2026).

SYNOPSIS
When her daughter Jo reveals her teenage pregnancy, pastor’s wife Mary enacts a plan to convince her entire town that the child is the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Once one of their staged “Miracles” turns deadly and a dark secret from Mary’s past threatens to reveal itself, Mary and Jo must both make difficult decisions and grapple with what it means to have so much influence over the life of one’s own child.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

CHRISTIE:
(Female-presenting) Incumbent mayor running for re-election with plans to one day run for Governor. Mother of Jo’s boyfriend Eldon, Christie’s campaign becomes overshadowed by her connection to Mary’s staged miracles. Distrustful of Mary and her husband’s Church, Christie threatens to expose Mary’s plot before unwittingly becoming part of it.
The actor playing Christie will also embody various ensemble roles throughout the play, chiefly the role of a Marian Apparition, clad in white linens who stands on stage to listen to Mary and Jo as they offer testaments and confessional prayers.

ELDON:
(Male-presenting) Jo’s boyfriend and the son of the mayor (Christie). A Gen Z, Christian-Grindset, wannabe influencer/rapper who is secretly gay. Jo is able to convince Eldon to help her keep up the “Second Coming” ruse, but the longer the lie goes on the more volatile and unpredictable he becomes.
The actor playing Eldon will also embody various ensemble roles throughout the play.

JOHN:
(Male-presenting) The teenage immigrant son of a groundskeeper, the real father of Jo’s baby. Earnest and humble, he has a brief love affair with Jo while she is at summer camp. Once he finds out about Jo’s pregnancy, he becomes intent on being part of the baby’s life, much to Mary’s distress.
The actor playing John will also embody various ensemble roles throughout the play.

CLARENCE / SOLOMON:
(Male-presenting) A split role: Clarence is the pastor of a Megachurch in Tennessee who believes wholeheartedly that his daughter is pregnant with the second coming of Christ. He’s always chewing gum and smiling. He does not belong to any real life religious denomination: a Megachurch pastor, his only doctrine is attention, influence, and outrage.
The actor cast as Clarence will also play Solomon, a man from Mary’s past whom she enlists to help her maintain her lie. He has an elastic band on his wrist which he snaps reflexively to deal with his anger issues. He has done despicable things and his involvement in Mary’s plan is a testament to her desperation.

THREE-RING SUCKER PUNCH
TRSP is a new production company based in Edmonton by the team behind Old Man Sallow who Lives on Crypt Rock which premiered last Fringe.

Rehearsals will begin in July and continue into August, averaging ~15 hours a week. Dates and times of rehearsals will be decided upon following casting.

This production will operate on a profit-share model. With cast and crew receiving a share of profits following the run of the show at the Fringe festival.

AUDITIONS
Please indicate your interest in auditioning by filling out the Google Form linked here

Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to accommodate every applicant with an audition. Following the deadline on April 14th, select applicants will be provided further instructions via email on how to sign-up for an audition slot as well as access to audition sides.

Auditions will take place online. Will be provided a reading partner, taking the form of a reading of a side which you will have access to prior to the audition. Not expected that these are off-book but applicants are encouraged to have a side selected prior to their audition time.

Self-tapes will be accepted if actors are unable to make an audition time.
