All the Latest Information and How They Might Impact Your Holiday, Canada Reviews

26 May 20263 Mins Read

Portugal remains one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations, whether you’re on a bar-hopping city break in Lisbon or catching some waves in the Algarve.

However, workers across the public and commercial transport network are staging industrial action to protest proposed government reforms next week, and it’s set to cause significant delays for all travellers.

Below is a round-up of when the strikes are taking place, the services that will be affected, and what your rights are if you’ve already planned to travel.

When are the transport strikes in Portugal?

The strikes will be taking place next week on June 3, but as is often the case with widespread industrial action, the delays could well impact travel on the following days, too. This comes after months of long queues at Lisbon airport due to the implementation of the new Entry/Exit (EES) system.

What services will be affected by the strikes in Portugal?

Cabin crew, rail workers, public transport staff and even doctors are participating in this round of industrial action.

Portuguese newspaper The Resident estimates that up to 500 flights could be affected on the day, including 300 operated by TAP, the country’s flag carrier, as well as other Portugália and SATA services.

FECTRANS, a trade union that represents public transport staff, will be participating, and this will likely affect services like Lisbon Metro. Ferries and public transport in Porto will also be affected.

Why are the strikes happening?

The industrial action is in protest against reforms proposed by the Portuguese government, which will make it significantly easier for companies to sack workers, as well as loosen restrictions on outsourcing.

Some reports suggest that up to 79 percent of cabin crew union members voted to take part in the strikes.

According to euronews, the National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Personnel have described the proposed changes as an ‘unprecedented attack on established rights’.

What are your rights if your journey is affected by the strike action?

Should your journey be affected by strike action, your compensation depends on your airline or travel provider. Some won’t cover any costs caused by strikes out of their control – such as at specific airports or by baggage handlers – but others will offer you compensation.

If you book a flight now, knowing the strikes are set to take place, there’s a very small chance you’ll be entitled to any kind of compensation.

For all the most accurate information, check the conditions of your booking with your chosen airline, and also with your travel insurance provider.
