There are two Calgary beaches where you can swim in your birthday suit

3 June 20263 Mins Read

There is no denying that there is something special about summers in Calgary. Even without the oceans or palm trees, the city still offers plenty of places to slow down and enjoy the sunshine by the water.

In the city, there are also a couple of spots where clothing is optional. These areas are rooted in naturist values that focus on respect, comfort, and body positivity, and while some people choose to go without swimwear, others do not. It’s entirely up to you.

If that’s not your thing, there are plenty of other beaches and river spots around Calgary where you can enjoy a classic summer day. But if you’re curious, here are two well-known places people gather to enjoy the outdoors a little differently.

Weaslehead Beach

Weaslehead Flats sits near the Glenmore Reservoir and has been a popular summer swimming spot for years, especially for those seeking a peaceful spot by the water.

Within the space, there are areas used by the naturist community, where clothing-optional swimming and sunbathing are part of the experience.

According to Calgary Nude Recreation (CNR), “the area is open to people of all body types, sizes, all genders, all sexualities, young or old, and clothed or naked.”

Getting there does take a bit of effort, with a roughly 30-minute walk from the parking area. But luckily, the trail through the trees makes it part of the experience, and by the time you arrive, it feels like you’ve fully stepped out of the city.

When: Open year-round (best to visit from June to August)
Time: Open 24 hours
Where: Access point at 6634 37th St. SW, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: Free

Hidden Beach in Fish Creek Park

Hidden Beach lives up to its name in more ways than one.

Set within Fish Creek Park, it is surprisingly tucked away despite being close to some of the city’s busiest pathways. There are no obvious signs or direct routes, which is part of what keeps it feeling so secluded.

To reach the beach, you must follow the established trails near Canyon Meadows Drive and head towards the creek-side pathways until the space opens up into a small hidden shoreline.

When: Open year-round (best to visit from June to August)
Time: Open 24 hours
Where: Access point at 413 Canyon Meadows Dr. SE, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: Free

What to know before you go

Looking to check it out for yourself? According to Calgary Nude Recreation, while these spaces are not officially designated, they have been used for decades without issue. The organization also notes that its use for non-sexual naturism is well known to authorities, and that most nude areas in Canada are unofficial, aside from a couple of designated sites in other major cities.

And that is all the info you need before you decide if this is your kind of summer spot.

Soak up the sun, stay respectful, and enjoy Calgary’s summer your way.
