Ontario’s ‘nicest town around’ is home to a massive 15-foot bull

24 August 20263 Mins Read

Ontario is home to “the nicest town around,” according to the charming destination known as Chesley. It’s known for its quaint downtown, nature trails, natural beauty, and a huge bull statue.

You’ll find this gem in Bruce County, about two hours north of Toronto. It’s a short drive away from Port Elgin and Sauble Beach.

A visit to Chesley is an adventure! Sightsee along the Saugeen River through nature trails, do some local shopping, enjoy an evening dinner, and explore outdoor experiences, according to Visit Chesley.

Although its local shops are definitely worth exploring, a picture with its massive 15-foot-tall bull is a must.

What to know about Big Bruce in Chesley, Ont.

What is Big Bruce?

Playfully named Big Bruce, the massive monument is a 15-foot-tall, almost 20-foot-long bull.

And of course, he’s one of Chesley’s best-known landmarks.

Why is there a giant bull in Chesley?

According to the Municipality of Arran-Elderslie, Big Bruce was purchased by the Bruce County Cattlemen’s Association for the 1976 International Plowing Match hosted in Bruce County.

“He traveled around on a trailer promoting Bruce County and the beef industry before he was placed permanently outside the Municipal Office in Chesley,” adds the Town.

Big Bruce stands here now as a tribute to Harvey Davis, who was instrumental in the purchasing of Big Bruce and made an outstanding contribution to Elderslie Township, Bruce County and beyond.”

Where can you find Big Bruce?

Visitors looking to snap a photo with Bruce can find him at 1925 Bruce Rd. 10.

Is Big Bruce free to visit?

Big Bruce is absolutely free to visit, and no formal admission is required.

What else can you do in Chesley, Ont.?

Walk the Chesley Heritage Trail

But for scenic outdoor adventures, head along the Chesley Heritage Trail. This walk follows the North Saugeen River and rail line through Chesley.

It connects to some of its most important historical sites. Per Visit Chesley, there are two bridges that offer scenic views of the river on this trail. Visitors can access the trail from the main street at Riverside Park, from Krug Park on 2nd Street SW and from 4th Street SW.

According to the Town, historical plaques are currently being developed. They will be installed at points of interest as they are completed.

It’s a picture-perfect experience. And especially something to do before the season ends.
