Sumo is one of Japan’s most beloved — but secretive — traditions. Now, it’s coming to Calgary, so you don’t have to travel all the way to Nihon to see it.
From March 13 to 14, the Nutrien Western Event Centre will transform into a vibrant hub for Japanese culture. Sumo Fest is brand-new to Canada and the first sumo wrestling festival of its kind in the country.
These grandiose wrestlers are near celebrities in Japan, live and train together in stables, and have a specialty diet to maintain their mass. You’ll get to see them in action in a traditional dohyō (ring), with a Japanese-style market hall brimming with food, beverages, cultural exhibitions and interactive experiences.
“Even in Japan, sumo is not something people can access casually,” said Katelyn Marchyshyn, marketing and communications manager at Showpass. “It is limited in schedule, deeply ceremonial, and tied to a highly traditional structure. Sumo Fest offers Calgarians a truly one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience a taste of sumo live, featuring internationally recognized athletes. For many Canadians, this will be the only chance to experience sumo in person.”

Authentic and family-friendly
Finding authentic Japanese experiences can be difficult outside of Japan — but in Alberta, those cultural roots run deep.
“About 50 years ago, Japanese-Canadian survivors who had been interned began coming together to reconnect and rebuild — efforts that became the foundation of what grew into the Calgary Japanese Community Association (CJCA) and other community organizations,” said Marchyshyn. “When federal compensation was later provided, some of that support helped strengthen Japanese-Canadian organizations and community spaces, including Calgary’s early community centre momentum. That’s one of the reasons why Sumo Fest matters: it’s a chance to share Japanese culture with the wider Calgary community in an authentic, welcoming way while supporting CJCA and the cultural programming that continues those roots today.”
The event is produced in partnership with the Calgary Japanese Community Association, Showpass, and supported by the City of Calgary. A portion of ticket proceeds will support CJCA, allowing attendees to give back to the community in a meaningful way.
“Sumo is over a millennium-old tradition rooted in ceremony, respect, and cultural honour,” said Kim Aban, director of the Calgary Japanese Community Association, in a press release. “Our hope is to offer a first taste of sumo to Canadians that inspires deeper appreciation for Japanese culture and the creation of future fans.”
This will be a family-friendly, multi-hour festival experience. Guests are invited to arrive early, explore, eat, and engage before the live sumo matches. A range of seating options is available, including accessible individual tickets, premium ringside seating and VIP tables.
A mouthwatering market
You can have your mochi and eat it too at Sumo Fest, with a vibrant Japanese-style market hall complete with food and beverage vendors, cultural exhibitions, and interactive experiences.
“The market hall is a core part of the festival experience and will feature a variety of restaurants, breweries, and vendors,” said Marchyshyn. “While specific vendors will be announced closer to the event, guests can expect a mix of traditional favourites and street food-style offerings, paired with beverages and vendor booths that make the space feel like an immersive festival market.”
You can expect to sip sake, drink Japanese ale, eat traditional cuisine, and take part in cultural activities. There’s a mix of offerings with a little something for everyone; evening shows offer a lively, cultural nightlife atmosphere, while Saturday’s daytime show is family-friendly, with space to explore the market hall, enjoy food, and experience Japanese traditions at a relaxed pace.
