Bangkok is about to get a new luxury hotel, but this one comes with a serious sense of history. Set to open on December 20, 2026, The Langham Custom House Bangkok will transform one of the Thai capital’s most recognizable historic buildings into a 75-room luxury retreat.
The hotel will take over Bangkok’s former Custom House, an ornate Neo-Palladian landmark that was completed in 1888. Once a center of international trade and commerce along the Chao Phraya River, the building is being given a new chapter as part of The Langham’s growing portfolio of distinctive hotels around the world.
Rather than replacing the building’s historic character, the project is designed around it. The original architecture provides a dramatic backdrop for the hotel, offering travelers the opportunity to stay somewhere that feels considerably more storied than a typical new-build luxury property.
“Every column, archway, and carefully kept detail tells part of its story,” Langham Bangkok writes in an Instagram post showcasing the house’s history. “For 138 years, this house has witnessed Bangkok evolve, from a [center] of trade connecting Thailand to the world, to the vibrant, international city it is today.”

The former Custom House dates back to a period when Bangkok was rapidly developing its role as an international trading hub. Its location along the river was particularly significant, as the Chao Phraya served as one of the city’s most important commercial arteries. Today, that same riverside setting puts the hotel in an area that blends historic Bangkok with the city’s modern luxury, dining, and cultural scenes.
With just 75 rooms, The Langham Custom House Bangkok is also expected to have a more intimate feel than some of the city’s larger luxury hotels. The relatively small room count could make the property particularly appealing to travelers looking for a quieter, more exclusive base in one of Southeast Asia’s most crawling capitals.

The Langham brand is known for combining classic design with modern luxury, making the former Custom House an especially fitting addition to the brand’s international collection. The brand traces its roots to The Langham, London, which opened in 1865 as one of Europe’s first grand hotels. Today, its portfolio spans four continents, with properties in destinations including New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Sydney, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Jakarta.
With its December 20, 2026 opening date, The Langham Custom House Bangkok is arriving just in time for the year-end travel season. Thailand’s tourism industry has been on a strong rebound, with the country welcoming more than 35 million international visitors in 2024, up substantially from the pandemic-era lows, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
Bangkok, in particular, remains at the center of that recovery: 30.3 million international arrivals visited the Thai capital in 2025, making Bangkok the world’s most visited city for international travelers, according to Euromonitor data cited by the TAT. The city also ranked among the world’s top trending destinations in recent Mastercard Economics Institute’s travel data and currently ranks No. 8 in Time Out’s “World’s Best Cities” list, underscoring continued demand for Bangkok as Thailand attracts visitors with its food, culture, shopping, and increasingly diverse luxury-hotel scene.
Demand for luxury stays is showing little sign of slowing, even as travelers become more selective about where they spend. JLL found that global wealth grew at a 9.6% compound annual rate from 2015 to 2025. Meanwhile, Deloitte’s 2025 holiday travel survey found that one in four travelers qualified as luxury travelers, based on their recent stays and spending on hotels.
As travelers increasingly seek not just five-star amenities but distinctive, destination-specific experiences, Bangkok — and The Langham Custom House — is well-poised to welcome them.
