Fast food restaurants are famous (infamous?) for movie tie-ins, perhaps best summed up by Rick and Morty’s strange obsession with Szechuan sauce from the 1998 Mulan and McDonald’s crossover. Burger King is out to one-up this tradition courtesy of an iconic figure: Goku.
“Burger King is bringing the cosmic energy of the anime multiverse straight to your taste buds,” a promotional message reads. “In celebration of one of the most beloved anime franchises, Burger King is launching a limited-time Dragon Ball Super menu packed with bold flavors and immersive packaging designed to delight guests of all ages.”
The promotion, which begins on Sept. 1, will include special menu options and exclusive anime figurines. As for combos, there’s the Dragon Ball Super Power Up Pack, which includes 10-piece chicken nuggets with the Super Saiyan sauce, a medium fry, the Dragon Ball Burst lemonade, and one of the figurines.
This sauce is described as “a sweet, savory, and tangy teriyaki-style sauce inspired by the beloved Dragon Ball Super characters.” The lemonade is mango peach flavored with boba that “brings the magic of the Dragon Balls to every sip.” As for the figurines, there will be six available: Goku, Super Saiyan God Goku, Vegeta, Super Saiyan God Vegeta, Piccolo, and Beerus. There will also be a King Jr. option for the meal, which includes the toy.
Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball is both one of the highest-selling manga and one of the most popular anime of all time. The most recent installment in the series was Dragon Ball Daima, a light-hearted spin-off set after Dragon Ball Z. As for what’s next, there’s Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, which is a remaster of the anime’s previously adapted Beerus arc that features new animation. After that is Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, which adapts the manga arc of the same name. There are plenty of projects outside of anime, like the upcoming action RPG Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3. If there was any doubt that Dragon Ball had made it stateside, it has now achieved the most sanctified tradition in American capitalism: the fast food crossover.
