Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took the gaming world by storm when it was released in April 2025. Sandfall Interactive’s debut RPG ended up selling over 8 million copies and winning hundreds of awards. But it was generating buzz long before it was even released.
In January 2025, Story Kitchen announced it was working on a movie adaptation of Expedition 33. While there’s been no further update on it since, that hasn’t stopped players from fan-casting the roles. One actor from the game who could easily play their character in the movie would be Rich Keeble, the deep voice behind the feet-obsessed gestral warrior Monoco. However, he hasn’t been in talks at all about reprising his role.
“I don’t know anything about how that film is going on,” Keeble told Polygon recently in a video interview. “I would love to play Monoco in any shape or form, [but] obviously they’re going to get famous people in to play the characters where possible.
“But because Monoco is most likely to be CGI-ed or [motion-captured] or something — hopefully not AI, goodness me — I do like to think that maybe they could get me to do the voice from a studio in London,” Keeble said. He joked he wouldn’t need to worry about visas or fly anywhere to be on set. He wouldn’t even have to leave his home. “I’ll do it here,” he said. “I’ll do it in my booth right now.”
Monoco has become a fan-favorite character, partly because of the comedic levity he brings to an otherwise dour journey. That’s in part due to the strong writing in the game, but also thanks to Keeble’s funny delivery and comedy-filled background. His career started off with stand-up comedy, live sketches, and a stint on a British sketch show.
“In British TV comedy, certainly now there’s often a note or a direction where you don’t want to overplay it,” he said, and he brought that restraint to his performance as Monoco, who doesn’t explicitly crack jokes despite being the game’s funniest character. “The characters believe what they’re saying, they don’t think it’s funny, and that’s where the comedy comes from.”
Keeble’s comedy chops came through in his chat with Polygon when he joked, “I invite every fan to boycott that film, unless I can voice Monoco, or I will be filled with murderous rage.”
While some actors enjoy watching their own films, and others avoid them at all costs, Keeble will gladly see the CIair Obscur: Expedition 33 movie in theaters — on one condition, of course.
“Oh yes, I will be depending on whether I’m in it or not.”
