Doctor Who’s missing revival era returns shockingly soon to streaming on AMC+

14 May 20263 Mins Read

It has been almost a full year since anyone in the United States has been able to stream the entirety of modern Doctor Who in one place. While Disney+ has been the home of Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th Doctor since late 2023, HBO Max removed seasons 1 through 13 last July, effectively removing the entire 2005 revival era from streaming in the U.S. overnight. That meant every episode starring Christopher Eccleston’s 9th Doctor through the end of Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor had gone the way of Gallifrey. But now, Doctor Who’s modern revival has finally found a new streaming home.

As first reported by Collider on Thursday, all 176 episodes of Doctor Who’s 2005 to 2022 revival run — including the show’s many specials — will begin streaming on AMC+ starting June 11.

The deal includes every season starring Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker, though it notably does not include the classic 1963 to 1989 series, Tennant’s 60th anniversary specials, or Gatwa’s more recent Disney+ run. AMC+ is also offering a promotional subscription deal of $29.99 for a full year of streaming, but that deal ends May 25.

The move means Doctor Who is still split across multiple streaming services in the United States, but for longtime fans, AMC+ finally restores access to nearly two decades of the franchise’s modern history — and gives newcomers a much easier way to start with 2005’s “Rose” instead of jumping directly into Gatwa’s recent run.

A win for Classic Who fans

Many of the show’s biggest fans began watching during this era. While Eccleston’s brief tenure as the Doctor was inconsistent in quality, it did have some gems. Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor arguably had the biggest impact in bringing the show into mainstream popularity with his silly charm and affinity for bowties. Even so, David Tennant is likely the most popular choice among fans for “Best Doctor.” As for me, Peter Capaldi is the best Doctor, capturing the world-weary rage and tenderness that an ancient being like the Doctor should have. It’s just so unfortunate that his time on the show was marred by some of the worst storylines and overall writing, with a few cherished exceptions.

In any case, we should all be grateful that the Doctor has finally found a new home. Ready those TARDIS keys, because the Doctor returns on June 11. Allons-y!
