One of the greatest things about having been around for 29 years now, is that our former students often come by to visit. Last week, before this Easter week, Jesus stopped by the theatre. Not that Jesus. Jesús, a former neighbor and student of ours when he was a kid a couple of decades ago.
Now thirty and father of three, he stops by frequently to show us photos of the kids. Occasionally he brings one of the kids for us to meet. He is proud. And so are we. Of him. For growing up in tough circumstances and coming out on the other side. For working hard to support his growing family.
For a thirty-year-old, Jesús now talks a lot about the many health things he’s doing. He works out. He’s cut back on calories. He’s lost 50lbs. He’s taking a myriad of concoctions and vitamins. I asked why such focus on his health all of a sudden and he said that he’s got to take care of himself now so he can be here for his kids. What a mature thing for little Jesús to say.
He’s joined a labor union so he can earn more money. He’s thinking about the future. His family’s future. He’s even thinking about where he’d like to retire when the kids are all grown up. Jesús is all grown up. He’s thinking like a grown up. We’re very proud of him.

About Town
We serve about 10,000 students per year with the best theatre field trip anywhere. And when we are not doing our field trip performances, we occasionally take field trips ourselves. Yes we do.
Each school year we give about 25 scholarships for 30 weeks of leadership training in our Teen Leadership Academy. That includes a weekly acting class with master teacher Debbie Devine, opportunities to mentor younger kids in our After ‘Cool program, workforce readiness training, and field trips to LA arts institutions and colleges.
We introduce our Leadership Academy teens to local colleges when we take them to see theatrical productions at USC, LACC, ELACC, and UCLA (Geffen). We took our teens to see What the Constitution Means To Me a few years ago at The Taper, to see several shows at Casa 0101 over the last few years, and recently to see Dragon Mama at the Geffen.
It is one thing to take some teens to a show at the Geffen, it is another entirely to introduce inner-city teens to a side of Los Angeles they’ve never been to. To watch them walk around the charming stone lobby of the Geffen, timidly at first, then lingering as if they know they belong there, after the show. We took our teens to Westwood in Ubers. When we performed at The Wallis in Beverly Hills, we took them to Beverly Hills on public buses. We’re trying to teach them about their city, for context.
On the way to Westwood recently I pointed out things they’d never seen, like Century City, the Veterans Cemetery and the Hollywood Hills in the distance. But nothing got this carload of girls as excited as when a UCLA student pulled up beside us at stop light on Wilshire Blvd. He drove a two-seat convertible, with the top down and his shirt off. As hard as I’d been working on the drive to get them excited about their city, nothing did it like one hot Bruin at Westwood Blvd. Suddenly they were all interested in college.
As a special treat, our Education Director Tamara Koltes, arranged for a post-show chat with the creator and star of the show were at the Geffen to see, Dragon Mama. Actor and writer Sara Porkalob, is a personal friend of Tamara, and she was very gracious and personal in how she spoke with our kids. Sara really inspired them. And Everyone at the Geffen treated us like old friends.
Taking any kids to see excellent theatre matters. But taking kids to see theatre in a place they would normally not go… where they wouldn’t normally feel comfortable… And then to see a great show there and watch them grow confident and comfortable. Now that’s worth the price of admission, as they say.

La Semana de Jesús
Una de las cosas más gratificantes de llevar ya 29 años de trayectoria, es que nuestros exalumnos a menudo pasan a visitarnos. La semana pasada —justo antes de esta Semana Santa— Jesús pasó por el teatro. No el Jesús que está pensando, sino Jesús: un antiguo vecino y alumno nuestro de cuando era niño, hace un par de décadas.
Ahora, a sus treinta años y siendo padre de tres hijos, pasa con frecuencia para enseñarnos fotos de los niños. De vez en cuando trae a alguno de ellos para que lo conozcamos. Él se siente orgulloso. Y nosotros también. Orgullosos de él. Por haber crecido en circunstancias difíciles y haber logrado salir adelante. Por trabajar arduamente para mantener a su creciente familia.
Para tener sólo treinta años, Jesús habla ahora mucho sobre las numerosas medidas que está tomando para cuidar su salud. Hace ejercicio. Ha reducido su ingesta de calorías. Ha bajado 50 libras de peso. Toma una gran cantidad de preparados y vitaminas. Le pregunté a qué se debía ese repentino enfoque en su salud, y me respondió que tiene que cuidarse ahora para poder estar presente para sus hijos. ¡Qué palabras tan maduras viniendo del “pequeño Jesús”!
Se ha afiliado a un sindicato para poder ganar más dinero. Está pensando en el futuro. En el futuro de su familia. Incluso está pensando en el lugar donde le gustaría retirarse cuando sus hijos ya sean mayores. Jesús ya es todo un adulto. Piensa como un adulto. Geffen
Servimos a cerca de 10.000 estudiantes al año con la mejor excursión teatral que existe. Y cuando no estamos realizando nuestras funciones para excursiones escolares, ocasionalmente salimos de excursión nosotros mismos. Sí, así es.
Cada año escolar otorgamos unas 25 becas para un programa de formación en liderazgo de 30 semanas en nuestra Academia de Liderazgo Juvenil. Esto incluye una clase semanal de actuación con la maestra experta Debbie Devine, oportunidades para guiar a niños más pequeños en nuestro programa After ‘Cool, capacitación para la inserción laboral y excursiones a instituciones artísticas y universidades de Los Ángeles.
Mostramos a los jóvenes de nuestra Academia de Liderazgo las universidades locales cuando los llevamos a ver producciones teatrales en USC, LACC, ELACC y UCLA (Geffen). Hace unos años llevamos a nuestros jóvenes a ver What the Constitution Means To Me (Lo que la Constitución significa para mí) en el teatro The Taper; en los últimos años los hemos llevado a ver varios espectáculos en Casa 0101 y, recientemente, a ver Dragon Mama en el Geffen.
Una cosa es llevar a unos jóvenes a ver un espectáculo al Geffen, y otra muy distinta es mostrarles a jóvenes de los barrios del centro de la ciudad; esta es una faceta de Los Ángeles que nunca antes habían visitado. Verlos recorrer el encantador vestíbulo de piedra del Geffen —tímidos al principio, pero luego tomando su tiempo después la función, como si supieran que ese es su lugar— es una experiencia única. Llevamos a nuestros jóvenes a Westwood en vehículos Uber. Cuando actuamos en el teatro The Wallis, en Beverly Hills, los llevamos hasta allí en autobuses públicos. Nuestro objetivo es enseñarles a conocer su ciudad, para darles contexto.
Recientemente, de camino a Westwood, les señalé lugares que nunca habían visto, como Century City, el Cementerio de Veteranos y las colinas de Hollywood a la distancia. Pero nada entusiasmó tanto a este grupo de chicas y chicos como el momento en que un estudiante de la UCLA se detuvo junto a nosotros en un semáforo en Wilshire Blvd. Conducía un descapotable de dos plazas, con la capota abajo y el torso descubierto. Por mucho que me hubiera esforzado durante el trayecto para despertar su interés por la ciudad, nada surtió tanto efecto como la presencia de aquel atractivo estudiante (*Bruin*) en Westwood Blvd. De repente, todas mostraron un gran interés por la universidad.
Como un regalo especial, nuestra Directora de Educación, Tamara Koltes, organizó una charla posterior a la función con la creadora y protagonista de la obra que fuimos a ver al Geffen: Dragon Mama. La actriz y escritora Sara Porkalob es amiga personal de Tamara, y se mostró sumamente amable y cercana al conversar con nuestros chicos. Sara realmente los inspiró. Y todo el personal del Geffen nos trató como si fuéramos viejos amigos.
Llevar a los niños a ver teatro de excelencia es algo importante. Pero llevarlos a ver teatro a un lugar al que normalmente no irían, donde habitualmente no se sentirían cómodos y luego ver allí una gran obra y observar cómo ganan confianza y se sienten a gusto… Eso sí que vale el precio de la entrada, como suele decirse.
