Rush's New Drummer Completely Nails One of the Bands's 'Most Challenging Songs'

14 June 20263 Mins Read

It’s challenging to impress diehard Rush fans, but Anika Nilles has done just that.

Nilles is the band’s new drummer, stepping into the shoes left by legendary drummer Neil Peart and leaving fans completely in awe of her precision in taking on the band’s infamously intricate drum parts.

Nilles was officially announced as Rush’s touring drummer in October 2025, following surviving members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson’s announcement that the band would reunite for a summer 2026 tour. Since then, Nilles has been a key part of the Rush lineup, including the band’s Fifty Something Tour.

Social media clips showcasing Nilles’ performances of “2112” and “The Spirit of Radio” have gone viral, creating strong demand for additional footage of her live performances. Some fans have even shared the hot take that Nilles is as good as—if not better than—Peart.

“She not only nailed it, she nailed it tighter than any time Neil played it,” commented one fan.

Another gushed, “People can talk all they want. Say she’s not Neil, this, that, or the other. Of course she’s not Neil. It’s his music; we all know that. But she is crushing it with them. She’s not doing anything extra. She’s not doing anything different. She is just flat-out killing it, and Neil would be extremely proud to watch her play.”

“That should quiet the haters,” added another. “She nailed it. They didn’t select her by chance.”

How Anika Nilles Landed the Rush Gig

Anika is absolutely amazing. Even Neil Peart himself said this was one the hardest songs for him. She nailed it & the whole show #rush #anikanilles

Anika Nilles, 43, earned an audition with Rush through a connection to Geddy Lee’s longtime bass technician, John “Skully” McIntosh.

Nilles has admitted that she wasn’t even a Rush fan when she arrived for her audition. However, her musicianship and understanding of the band’s complex material quickly won Lee and Lifeson over during the audition process. By the end of the rehearsals, both musicians were convinced that Nilles was the right choice to join the band’s lineup.

Rush’s Fifty Something Tour Marks a New Era

Rush’s Fifty Something Tour launched in June 2026, marking the band’s first full tour in 11 years and its first since Neil Peart’s death in 2020.

Nilles’ ability to honor Peart’s legacy while also making the songs her own is helping the progressive rock legends connect with an entirely new generation of fans. Through viral social media clips and online searches for her performances, Nilles is introducing Rush’s music to audiences who may be discovering the band for the first time.
