Magic: The Gathering’s Secrets of Strixhaven set has officially entered the history books, surpassing 2019’s War of the Spark to become the biggest prerelease event ever. Wizards of the Coast announced the milestone on X, adding that the celebration is far from over with MagicCon: Las Vegas kicking off on May 1.
Strixhaven’s massive success should come as no surprise. Built around five rival magical colleges, the set leans heavily into spell-slinging gameplay, giving players a clean, flavorful hook that’s easy to grasp for newcomers while still offering plenty of depth for experienced deckbuilders. It’s a return to a more grounded Magic setting, focused on in-world lore and mechanics rather than another oddly out-of-place Universes Beyond set.
Strixhaven’s prerelease events, which occur at registered game stores ahead of each set’s release, also come with a clever hook. Rather than just getting the usually six packs to build a deck out of for a quick tournament, players picked one of the five colleges and then recieved a special box that included extra cards from that college. This extra incentive may have encouraged even more people to check out a prerelease than usual.
On the financial side, early standout cards include Emeritus of Ideation (around $30), Witherbloom, the Balancer (around $25), and Lorehold, the Historian (around $24). While no cards have exceeded $30 yet, the set is already shaping up to have strong value across Commander, Pioneer, Legacy, and many other formats.
Wizards of the Coast isn’t tamping down the momentum either. The celebration continues at MagicCon: Las Vegas, where Secrets of Strixhaven is expected to be a major focus in organized play, panels, and community events. Attendees can also expect additional announcements and possible surprises during the weekend, like a sneak preview of Magic’s next major offering.
And don’t worry if you can’t make it to Vegas, as Wizards is keeping the emphasis on local game stores. In its post highlighting Strixhaven’s new record, Wizards encourages players to continue this prerelease energy at game stores, reinforcing the in-person communities that remain the backbone of Magic’s organized play ecosystem.
