There’s a free tree-planting event coming to Edmonton this fall

2 September 20263 Mins Read

Tree Canada is teaming up with the City of Edmonton to host a free tree-planting event in celebration of National Tree Day this September.

National Tree Day is this upcoming Wednesday, Sept. 23, and Edmonton is showing out to commemorate the occasion.

At a local park, guests are invited to plant trees and steward the land in honour of the holiday.

With all the tools you’ll need provided and no experience needed, this event offers a great way to give back to the environmental side of the community.

What to know before volunteering for National Tree Day

When is this National Tree Day event?

While National Tree Day is on Wednesday, Sept. 23, this event will be taking place on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 3 to 6 p.m.

This is just one of the 14 events across Canada celebrating the holiday.

Where will the trees be planted?

The trees will be planted in Terwillegar Park, a large natural park in southwest Edmonton.

Where will the group meet and is there parking nearby?

The group is going to be meeting at the planting area down a path out of the Terwillegar Park parking lot. On the tree-planting event’s registration page, there is a map with the designated location marked.

As for parking, there are spots available at the Terwillegar Park parking lot.

What do I need to wear or bring to the event?

According to Tree Canada, volunteers should plan to bring:

  • A water bottle
  • Closed-toe shoes or boots
  • Long pants
  • Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • A hat
  • Hand sanitizer

Volunteers will also receive a snack courtesy of Vachon, as per the event page.

Do I need any experience to participate?

You do not need any prior experience to participate or enjoy the event. In addition to providing all necessary tools, there will be guidance and instruction from experienced volunteers to help you along.

What if there’s bad weather?

In the case of light rain, according to Tree Canada, the event will typically proceed. For severe weather conditions like heavy rainfall or thunderstorms, the organizers will notify participants of any changes or cancellations ahead of the event.

How will this make an impact on the environment?

As stated by Tree Canada on the event page, there are a few ways these events positively impact the environment.

These activities not only support biodiversity, but also help create a more resilient and sustainable park environment. They also enhance ecosystem health and increase native species diversity, all through stewardship of the land and tree-planting.

Do I need to register?

You will need to register online on Eventbrite, with limited spaces available.

When: Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026
Time: 3 to 6 p.m.
Where: 16360 Rabbit Hill Rd. NW, Edmonton, Alta.
