Visitor praises Vancouver drivers for being ‘more courteous and relaxed’ than Albertans

24 August 20263 Mins Read

An Alberta visitor to B.C. had nothing but good things to say about the province, while throwing some shade at their own.

“Hey, British Columbians,” the Albertan said to the British Columbia subreddit.

“As an Albertan who visited Vancouver this past week, I want to say thank you.”

The Albertan said he drove from Alberta (hopefully it wasn’t this guy) and that B.C. residents are a “different breed.”

They added, “Holy hell this would not fly in Alberta that’s for sure.”

The Redditor went on to talk about traffic in B.C.

“You know how to zipper merge, courteous, more relaxed, no middle fingers, honking,” he said.

He was clearly very fortunate in his experience, which isn’t necessarily the norm, as many noted in response.

The Albertan admitted he might not have seen the full, real picture, saying, “Yes, I was in the typical Van proper tourist spots and also West Van, so I get that other areas might not have the same [driving] habits.”

In response, one B.C. resident said, “Vancouver drivers are very oblivious. They follow the rules as best they can, but often don’t really have a full grasp of how to apply those rules to their actual experience of driving.”

Someone else said, “I take it you didn’t drive around Surrey.”

That elicited an “Or Richmond,” response.

“Surrey driving is high-speed chaos. Richmond driving is low-speed chaos,” someone else replied.

There was lots of disagreement about the state of B.C. traffic.

“I found the complete opposite when I have visited Alberta, even though I expected it to be worse. Drivers here are trash, so I’m glad you had a good experience.”

Another B.C. driver said that Edmonton was one of their least favourite cities to drive in.

The Albertan Redditor even said he had a good driving experience on the Lions Gate Bridge, which is obviously not the norm.

B.C. and Alberta driving laws

While B.C., Alberta and most Canadian cities share similar driving laws, there are some key differences between B.C. and Alberta.

For example, you might not be aware of this, but in B.C., a driver is actually allowed to turn left on a red light from a two-way or one-way street onto a one-way street.

Alberta has strict rules against turning left on red lights.

There are also different rules for speeds between the two provinces.

What do you make of the Albertan’s thoughts on B.C. driving and traffic?
