Wednesday Season 3 Expected Netflix Release Date & Everything We Know So Far

Wednesday will be back for season 3 on Netflix, but it won’t be on your screens anytime soon. With a long wait ahead as the series has yet to begin production, a 2027 release is now the current expectation. Here’s our ongoing preview of everything we know about season 3 of Wednesday so far.

In case you missed it, Netflix has officially confirmed that Wednesday will return for a third season on July 23rd, 2025, along with some new artwork. That news came alongside the revelation that a spin-off series focusing on Uncle Fester remains in early discussions, having been revealed first back in 2023. Netflix’s renewal came just ahead of season 2 premiering across two parts.

Of course, many had predicted that season 3 was inevitable, and some early production listings suggested it was in the works much earlier than Netflix had publicly planned. Upon the renewal, showrunner Alfred Gough said, “Our goal for Season 3 is the same as it is for every season: to make it the best season of Wednesday we possibly can,” adding, “We want to continue digging deeper into our characters while expanding the world of Nevermore and Wednesday.”

Miles R. Millar and Alfred Gough serve as showrunners and executive producers, joined at the executive producer level by Kayla Alpert. Matt Lambert, Diane Ruggiero, and Jenn Kao work as co-executive producers, while Danielle DiPaolo is credited as co-producer. Raphie Cantor serves as executive story editor, and Lore V. Olivera is a staff writer.

How well did Wednesday season 2 perform on Netflix?

As expected, Wednesday season 2 delivered the biggest TV premiere of 2025, pulling in 50 million views in its first week on Netflix. In total, Wednesday season 2 spent 11 consecutive weeks in the global top 10s, picking up 881 million viewing hours.

On December 9th, 91 days after season 2 part 2 had released, the show had completed its run and ranked fourth in Netflix’s all-time English TV top 10 list (although Stranger Things 5 would later topple it and push it down to fifth).

In that 91-day window, Wednesday season 2 picked up 928.5M hours watched, equating to 119.3M views. Season 2 was notably down quite a lot on season 1, in fact, taking the views number, it ultimately ended up 52% down.

What happened at the end of Wednesday season 2?

Warning: The following section contains spoilers. Proceed with caution!

You can find an expanded version of this rundown in our Ending Explained article.

Wednesday has just survived her latest near-death experience, and even though Nevermore is in shambles, she’s back on the case. Season 2’s final four episodes pick up with Wednesday in a coma, but it isn’t long before she’s back to her usual self, with the spirit of Principal Weems returning as her reluctant guide. However, Wednesday’s got a lot on her plate: Tyler’s Hyde is still at large, the killer zombie is on the loose, and her best friend Enid’s death is seemingly imminent. Not to mention, the new principal, Principal Dort, is not who he appears to be.

Principal Dort is revealed to be the mastermind behind a cult called Morning Song. He uses Nevermore as a front to get rich, manipulating siren student Bianca to con Wednesday’s grandmother into giving him her entire fortune. Wednesday, Enid, and Agnes expose Dort’s true nature at the Nevermore Gala. They use a dance routine to distract him while Agnes steals his pocket watch, which protects him from siren calls. Without it, Bianca compels him to confess everything. Dort tries to escape, but Ajax turns him to stone with his Medusa powers just as a chandelier falls, smashing him to pieces.

The season also delves into the Addams Family’s history, revealing the origin of Pugsley’s zombie friend, Slurp. He’s actually Isaac Night, a brilliant scientist and the brother of Tyler’s mother, Francoise. Isaac created a clockwork heart to live forever and needed a powerful source to cure his sister of her Hyde curse. Years ago, he tried to use Gomez Addams, but Morticia intervened, cutting off Isaac’s hand, which became Thing.

In the present, Isaac, now with Thing reattached, kidnaps Pugsley to use his electrical powers for the procedure. But instead of curing Francoise, she forces a now-unwilling Tyler to take the cure. Wednesday, in a moment of shocking mercy, frees Tyler, and he and his mother battle it out in their Hyde forms. Francoise falls to her death, and Thing once again proves his loyalty to the Addams family by ripping out Isaac’s clockwork heart.

What to expect from Wednesday season 3

Season 2 wraps up with plenty of loose ends, with season 3 of Wednesday being teed up as the show’s darkest chapter. Here’s a look at what we can expect:

  • A road trip with Uncle Fester: Enid is now a full-fledged Alpha werewolf, and it’s unclear if she’ll ever turn back into a human. Wednesday opts to go on a road trip with Uncle Fester to find her, rather than returning home for the summer.
  • A new enemy: Wednesday is concerned that her moment of mercy—when she chose to free Tyler instead of killing him—will come back to haunt her. Tyler is still out there, possibly waiting to seek revenge.
  • The return of Ophelia: After Morticia gives Wednesday her great-grandmother’s book to help her with her psychic abilities, Wednesday has a vision of her estranged Aunt Ophelia. It seems Ophelia is locked up somewhere and is determined to see Wednesday die. The words “Wednesday must die” are scratched on a wall in Ophelia’s vision, suggesting a new and powerful foe.
  • The search for a new principal: Nevermore has a new opening for a principal, an unfortunate position that has now claimed two people.

In press notes provided to outlets following the release of season 2 part 2, we got new quotes from the creators about where we’re headed.

Showrunner Alfred Gough confirms that the show is going to take a dark turn, saying first and foremost, “The Ophelia who we get a glimpse of at the end of Episode 8 will definitely play a bigger part in Season 3,” and adds, “With everything in the Addams family, the mysteries always lie within the family. That glimpse of Ophelia is what’s going to lead us into the next season and potentially the darkest chapter of the Addams family.”

Co-creator Miles Millar notes the cryptic scrawl, “Wednesday must die,” is “a big part of Season 3,” and underscores the theme: “The Addams family love each other, but they also love secrets and lying to each other. It’s that juxtaposition of love and lies.”

Wednesday will not face it alone. Fred Armisen said to Netflix PR, “Fester and Wednesday end the season embarking on a hunt for Enid, who is an Alpha stuck in her werewolf form,” and promises, “More adventures and then a strengthening of that bond. They’re buddies for life.” Meanwhile, Gough hints that Tyler is not out of the picture: “He will definitely be showing up again.”

Other threads teased at the end of Season 2 also point forward. Gough explains Morticia’s final act: “At the end of the season, Morticia learns that she has to trust Wednesday. That’s why you have the scene where she gives Ophelia’s journal to Wednesday, because both Ophelia and Wednesday are Ravens. Maybe some of the answers to getting her ability back lie in that journal.” Millar also assures fans that Gwendoline Christie’s Weems will return despite leaving on sabbatical: “We’ll definitely see more of Weems. Gwen is a key part of the show, and the character of Weems is still embedded in Nevermore and Wednesday herself. We’re not sure quite how it’s going to happen or when it will happen exactly, but we definitely want to bring Gwen back.”

The first major new cast member for Wednesday season 3 was announced on November 25th, with Eva Green confirmed for the role of Aunt Ophelia. In a statement upon the news, Green said, “I’m thrilled to join the woefully twisted world of ‘Wednesday’ as Aunt Ophelia. This show is such a deliciously dark and witty world, I can’t wait to bring my own touch of cuckooness to the Addams family.”

Where is Wednesday Season 3 in Production?

Development

Filming Scheduled

Filming Ongoing

Post-Production

As we’ve been reporting, production on Wednesday season 3 is was initially targeting a start in Spring 2026. When production listings began emerging for Wednesday season 3 in early 2025, it hinted that filming was initially eyed to start in Fall 2025, but that’s now been pushed back.

As we’ve previously spoken about, the code name for season 3 is reportedly NIGHTSHADE & RAVEN, which has a few connections to the show. Nightshade Society is the secret student organization at Nevermore Academy, and Raven has many symbiotic connections. There’s also a school event called the Rave’N Dance.

By the end of 2025 and at the beginning of 2026, we had gotten a firm production start for season 3. According to OpenBrolly, prep on the new season began back in late July and filming is due to start on February 16th, 2026. Their production end date is dated for May 22nd, 2026, but it’s believed the series will actually be in production for around 9 months (according to various casting calls seen by What’s on Netflix), which would mean a wrap sometime around November 2026.

In addition, OpenBrolly also reports that season 3 is operating under the working title of Briarcliff, a reference to Briarcliff Manor, NY, which is the home base for the Tee & Charles Addams Foundation.

Various casting calls from Celtic Casting were issued in early 2026, looking for a myriad of extras and doubles for the upcoming season. Among the posts were calls for “diverse young adults to play high school students,” and seeking a woman of African descent with a “shaved head”.

The new season will follow in the footsteps of season 2, which relocated from Romania to Ireland. Expect many of the filming locations used for season 2 (and more) to feature.

When will Wednesday Season 3 be streaming on Netflix?

With production taking up most of 2026, that certainly rules out a late 2026 return. As a reminder, Season 1 took around 6 months of production, whereas Season 2 took closer to nine and a half months in total. Netflix did confirm that the series was not amongst the 2026 slate as part of Next on Netflix (What Next?).

2027 seems most likely, and our sources suggest that Netflix is continuing to eye a Summer 2027 return for the series, with early June currently cited. Of course, we don’t know whether they’ll split season 3 up again, but the fan reaction to this decision has been mixed at best. All this is subject to change as plans often change.

What do you think will happen in season 3? Will Wednesday find Enid, and will she be able to turn back into a human? Let us know in the comments below.
