What Does the Next Generation of Hotel Sustainability Look Like?

18 August 20264 Mins Read

In Brief: The article examines how hotels are adopting new sustainability strategies, including energy efficiency and waste reduction initiatives, to align with shifting consumer demands and compliance pressures.

Hotel sustainability is entering a new phase. For years, the industry’s focus was largely on visible initiatives: recycling bins, towel-reuse programmes, LED lighting and efforts to reduce single-use plastics. These measures are still important, but the next generation of sustainability will require a much broader approach.

For hotel operators, this begs the question of how sustainability can become embedded in investment decisions, property design, operations, procurement and the guest experience, while also strengthening resilience and long-term commercial performance.

From individual initiatives to whole-property thinking

The most significant shift will be from carrying out isolated sustainability projects to thinking of every part of the property as a system. Rather than treating energy, water, waste and sourcing as separate issues, hotels will increasingly assess how these areas interact.

Energy efficiency, for example, isn’t just about installing efficient equipment. It can influence building design, heating and cooling systems, renewable energy procurement and even room occupancy strategies. Similarly, reducing food waste involves implementing better kitchen processes, and also closer coordination between purchasing, menu design, forecasting and inventory management.

This approach can give operators a more accurate picture of where environmental improvements can deliver the greatest impact, as well as where investment should be prioritised.

Data as a sustainability tool

The next generation of hotel sustainability is likely to be considerably more data-driven, with hotels able to monitor energy consumption, water use, waste and carbon emissions at property or even asset level through available data.

The opportunity will allow for movement from reporting towards more active management. Real-time data can help identify unusual consumption, compare performance across properties and reveal where operational changes could have an immediate effect.

This can help make sustainability teams less reliant on annual measurements and more closely connected to day-to-day hotel operations. For owners and asset managers, consistent data could also make sustainability performance a more meaningful part of investment and property-management decisions.

Designing for resilience in addition to efficiency

Climate resilience will become another defining feature. Improving efficiency can reduce emissions and operating costs, but hotels must also prepare for the physical effects of climate change.

That means considering issues such as extreme heat, drought, flooding, water scarcity, power reliability and changing patterns of demand when developing or refurbishing properties. In some destinations, water management may become as strategically important as energy efficiency.

Future hotel design is therefore likely to place greater emphasis on passive cooling, efficient water systems, renewable energy, backup capacity, local materials and landscaping that can help manage heat and stormwater.

Sustainability that extends to the entire supply chain

Another important development is a broader understanding of a hotel’s supply chain. A property may operate efficiently while its environmental footprint remains significant because of what is purchased for it.

Food, furniture, linens, cleaning products, construction materials and technology all contribute to a hotel’s wider impact. Procurement teams will therefore need to play a larger role in sustainability strategy, with greater attention to product longevity, repairability, responsible sourcing and supplier transparency.

There is also an opportunity to strengthen local supply chains. Working with regional producers and suppliers can support local economies while potentially reducing transport impacts and creating a stronger connection between hotels and their destinations. This broader approach increasingly overlaps with the principles of regenerative tourism, which focus on creating positive outcomes for the places and communities involved in tourism.

This could mean looking further than the environmental performance of the property itself and considering how their operations contribute to the long-term health and prosperity of the destination.

Making sustainability commercially relevant

Sustainability will increasingly need to demonstrate business value. Rising energy costs, resource constraints, regulation and climate-related disruption are already making environmental performance an operational issue rather than just a reputational one.

Hotels that reduce energy and water consumption can lower costs. Durable products can reduce replacement spending, resilient buildings can limit disruption, and better waste management can improve resource efficiency.

The strongest sustainability strategies will be the ones that connect environmental targets with measurable commercial outcomes. This can help move sustainability from a specialist function into a core component of hotel strategy.

The future of hotel sustainability

The next generation of hotel sustainability is likely to be about building resilient, measurable and resource-efficient businesses.

For industry professionals, the opportunity is to consider what can be redesigned and improved – from buildings and supply chains to data systems and operating models. Hotels that take this broader view will be better positioned not only to reduce their environmental impact, but also to manage costs, respond to climate risks and remain competitive as expectations and operating conditions evolve.
