Winter isn’t done with Alberta just yet thanks to an incoming storm

13 May 20262 Mins Read

It looks like the weather is about to take a turn for the worse as a powerful spring storm bringing wind and snow is expected across Alberta starting Wednesday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement advising Albertans to prepare for a storm that will bring strong winds, heavy rain and snow, and potentially dangerous travel conditions.

ECCC says wind gusts of 90 to 100 km/h from the storm are possible across parts of east-central to southeastern Alberta beginning early Thursday morning as the weather system moves through the province.

In addition to strong winds, a mix of snow and rain is expected across parts of Alberta. The heaviest precipitation is expected to begin Thursday morning, with a total of 20 to 40 mm of rain and snow possible by Friday night.

The highest potential for snowfall will be across northern Alberta, where some areas could see over 20 cm.

“Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is likely. Prepare for some disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities. Driving conditions will likely be very difficult. High-sided vehicles could be overturned by the wind. Secure loose objects. If outside, protect yourself from flying or falling debris,” ECCC warned.

You can check out all of the current weather watches, warnings, and statements on the ECCC weather information portal.

If you’re trying to plan for May long, we spoke to ECCC about what Albertans can expect for the weekend.
