Marty Supreme and every new movie on Netflix, HBO, and more this weekend

24 April 20265 Mins Read

It’s a very competitive week on streaming. You can chase down Timothée Chalamet on HBO Max, where he plays a 1950s table tennis hustler (and potential vampire slayer) in Marty Supreme. A man desperate to find a job so he can support his family starts killing other applicants in order to get ahead in Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice, which finds a new position on Hulu.

Hunt up Apex on Netflix, where Charlize Theron is forced to play “The Most Dangerous Game” in the Australian wilderness. For something spooky, rent the folk horror Western The Wolf and the Lamb, where a missing boy returns home touched by evil.

Here’s a rundown of the most notable new releases on streaming and VOD, including the biggest, best, and most popular new movies you can watch at home right now.

New on Netflix

Apex

  • Genre: Survival thriller
  • Run time: 1h 36m
  • Director: Baltasar Kormákur
  • Cast: Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, Eric Bana

Rock climber Sasha (Charlize Theron) seeks to test herself with a solo trip to explore the Australian wilderness. But she gets more of a challenge than she wanted when Ben (Taron Egerton) steals her gear and begins hunting her for sport. She has to use all her skills to turn the hunt in her favor.

From our review:

Director Baltasar Kormákur (2015’s survival thriller Everest) and cinematographer Lawrence Sher (Joker and Joker: Folie à Deux) give Apex a stunning lushness. The movie is packed with deep colors, glorious texture, and striking sequences, plus plenty of drone footage showcasing unspoiled, rough wilderness. Apex’s narrative simplicity (and the fact that it’s a Netflix movie) might lend itself to second-screen viewing, but anyone who lets their attention wander to their phone is going to miss some beautiful footage that makes this story seem a lot bigger than it is.

New on HBO Max

Marty Supreme

  • Genre: Sports drama
  • Run time: 2h 30m
  • Director: Josh Safdie
  • Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion

Shoe salesman and competitive table tennis player Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet) dreams of winning the British Open. He goes to extreme lengths to pursue his goal, stealing money for travel and hustling everyone he meets. Director Josh Safdie drives the film with the same tense momentum he brought to Uncut Gems.

New on Hulu

No Other Choice

  • Genre: Black comedy thriller
  • Run time: 2h 19m
  • Director: Park Chan-wook
  • Cast: Lee Byung-hun, Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon

After he’s laid off from the papermaking company where he works, You Man-su (Lee Byung-hun) struggles to find a new job and support his family. After three months of unsuccessful applications and costcutting, he decides the best path forward is to start killing his competition.

New on Screambox

Kenneled

  • Genre: Horror
  • Run time: 1h 28m
  • Director: Jay Burleson
  • Cast: Dan Cutts, Jack Ryan Beckner, Emily Ferguson

A broke gig worker takes a dog-walking job and is shocked to discover that the pet is actually a man dressed as a Dalmatian. He decides to keep doing the work, encountering a bizarre neighborhood of people living as animals. Their demands test him to decide exactly what he’s willing to do for financial security.

New on Shudder

Dolly

  • Genre: Slasher
  • Run time: 1h 23m
  • Director: Rod Blackhurst
  • Cast: Fabianne Therese, Russ Tiller, Kate Cobb

Macy (Fabianne Therese) and Billy (Russ Tiller) go on what was supposed to be a romantic hike in the woods, only to be creeped out by a collection of dolls hanging from trees. Things get far worse when a woman wearing a porcelain doll mask kidnaps Macy to raise her as her new baby in her isolated home.

New to rent

Basic Psych

  • Genre: Psychological thriller
  • Run time: 1h 41m
  • Director: Melissa Martin
  • Cast: Michael Cerveris, David Conrad, Siena Goines

When psychiatrist Stuart Prince (Michael Cerveris) agrees to take elementary school principal Dan Riviello (David Conrad) on as a patient, Dan’s first question is about whether the doctor would have to report his past crimes. Dan confesses he is a murderer, taunting Stuart, who struggles with his professional obligation and his fears that Dan will kill again.

Immortal Combat

  • Genre: Sci-fi action
  • Run time: 1h 28m
  • Director: Monroe Robertson
  • Cast: Eve Fournier, Sasha Di Capri, Roxanne G.C. Brooks

Can’t wait for Mortal Kombat 2? Watch this low-budget riff where history’s greatest warriors including Joan of Arc, Attila the Hun, and Shaka Zulu are displaced from time and forced to fight each other in an arena. The captives instead band together to plot their escape and shut down the games.

Protector

  • Genre: Action thriller
  • Run time: 1h 32m
  • Director: Adrian Grünberg
  • Cast: Milla Jovovich, Matthew Modine, D. B. Sweeney, Isabel Myers

Lethal soldier Nikki Halsted (Milla Jovovich) left war behind to raise her daughter Chloe (Isabel Myers). But when her child is kidnapped, Nikki goes on a rampage, killing her way across the criminal underworld while pursued by the police and military.

The Serpent’s Skin

  • Genre: Horror thriller
  • Run time: 1h 23m
  • Director: Alice Maio Mackay
  • Cast: Alexandra McVicker, Avalon Fast, Jordan Dulieu

Anna (Alexandra McVicker) escapes from her transphobic hometown and falls for Gen (Avalon Fast), a goth tattoo artist, who shares her supernatural abilities. They’ll need to face their insecurities and learn to use their powers after Gen’s work unintentionally unleashes a demon that starts feeding on their friends.

The Wolf and the Lamb

  • Genre: Folk horror
  • Run time: 1h 36m
  • Director: Michael Schilf
  • Cast: Cassandra Scerbo, Adrianne Palicki, Jaydon Clark

In 1870, a mining community in the Montana Territory is plagued by a series of disappearances. When the young son of widowed school teacher Jo Beckett (Cassandra Scerbo) reappears, he brings back a dark presence that causes violence to erupt throughout the camp. Jo looks for answers in local folklore as she tries to stop the evil from spreading.
