Why your rewards points might not be working as hard as they could

14 May 20263 Mins Read

Rewards are more than a perk — when used intentionally, they can be a practical tool in everyday spending, helping to offset purchases like groceries, bills, gas, and other unavoidable expenses. It’s no secret that Canadians are getting crafty while managing rising costs, and using points is a simple way to make your dollar go further.

That’s why TD has partnered with TikTok creator Mel Hwang, as she takes on the TD Living on Rewards Challenge. To help inspire Canadians, the series follows Hwang as she shows what it could look like to use TD Rewards Points across everyday purchases and experiences by bringing points into real-life moments, from essentials to experiences.

It’s all about encouraging Canadians to think differently about their TD Rewards Points with the new Living on Rewards challenge. TD wants Canadians to see how flexible and versatile TD Rewards could be, so they can redeem them for meaningful purchases and experiences.

Where your rewards are going

Of the Canadians who use loyalty programs, 55 per cent report using their points to offset everyday costs, and 65 per cent say they would most likely redeem rewards for groceries.

However, point redemption isn’t without barriers. 37 per cent say their biggest frustration is having to build up a large balance before redeeming anything meaningful, and 18 per cent of Canadians say they’ve redeemed rewards for something they didn’t really want in order to ensure the points didn’t go to waste.

Make the most of your points

An easy way to earn points is with a travel or rewards TD Credit Card. Shifting your point usage to a practical part of everyday spending means that everything from a grocery run to monthly household bills adds more value. As a practical way to stretch your budget, using your points right now instead of saving them for later can unlock real benefits.

Ready to upgrade your headphones? Points. Replacing a lawnmower that finally conked out? Points. Taking the edge off a major purchase? Points, points, points!

You work hard to earn your rewards – now it’s time to start making the most of them. Learn more about TD Rewards and how you can use points more intentionally. For inspiration, follow along with the Living on Rewards challenge to see how TD Rewards Points can be used across all sorts of real-life spending moments.
