The long weekend is almost here, and although the weather is looking a little gloomy, Calgary still has plenty going on to keep things interesting. Rain or shine, there’s something about that extra day off that makes you want to get out, try something new, or at least not spend the whole weekend inside scrolling.

From local events to easy weekend plans, there are plenty of ways to turn the weather into more of a backdrop than a dealbreaker.

Calgary’s biggest celebration of anime, cosplay, and Japanese pop culture is back this weekend. Otafest takes over the city with panels, vendors, performances, and some seriously next-level cosplay energy.

When: Friday, May 15, to Sunday, May 17, 2026
Time: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: Telus Convention Centre – 120 9th Ave. SE, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: Starting at $58.69

Feel the force in real life as the Calgary Phil performs John Williams’ legendary score live-to-film during Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. It’s the final chapter of the original trilogy with Luke, Leia, Han and the full Rebel mission playing out alongside a live orchestra.

When: Friday, May 15 to Saturday, May 16, 2026
Time: Showtimes at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Where: Jubilee Auditorium – 1415 14th Ave NW, Calgary, Alta.

Spend a summer day stepping back in time at Heritage Park Historical Village as it celebrates its 62nd season. Visitors can take part in hands-on history experiences, from blacksmith demonstrations and old-fashioned printing presses to wagon rides, farm animals and the returning Badlands Dinosaur Dig.

All season long, guests can also enjoy the Antique Midway, live music at the Plaza, movie nights, and captain’s cruises aboard the S.S. Moyie.

Calgary’s “Don’t Tell Comedy” is turning a secret location into a one-night-only comedy show packed with surprise comedians and nonstop laughs. The venue is revealed the day of the event, keeping things mysterious right up until showtime.

If your idea of a good spring day involves open fields, good vibes, and a sky full of giant kites, this one’s for you. The Granary Road Kite Festival is making its debut just outside Calgary, and it’s already shaping up to be a colourful new spring tradition.
